Ford 2000 3cyl Diesel New Injection pump hits starter

Ok, the saga with this auction ford 2000 3cy diesel tractor continues. I guess this is half of the fun of working on old tractors; the surprises that come up.

I changed out the injection pump, albeit with an aftermarket one. I still have the original pump, but threw this one on there kind of to diagnose the hard starting condition. Would not recommend this route as the first pump leaked and a lot of time was wasted re-removing and waiting for a replacement.

Anyway, issue is that both the replacement pumps had clearance issues with the starter. The bearing cap of the starter hit the inlet end of the injection pump. The original Lucas CAV DPA fit fine. In fruswisdom, I filed a bit of material off of each to make them fit. Now I am concerned that if the starter goes bad in the future, I am going to be left with removing the IP to replace the starter.

Is anyone aware of a long and short version of starters on Ford 2000 3cyl diesel tractors? Anyone run into this using an aftermarket IP?

Thank you.

The luck I have with aftermarket parts, having to modify or machine or tweak them in some way to make them work, I never was brave enough to try an aftermarket injector pump. I simply get what I have rebuilt and have had excellent results with that.

The later Iskra starters are longer than the original Lucas but still fit as that s what is used on the later models
Once the pump is in place there should be clearance between it and the starter
The starter actually sets out farther than the inj pump making it easier to remove. For me it s simpler to remove the fuel filter base, then the starter before I remove the inj pump

This is a aftermarket pump with a Lucas starter

This is a 3930 original pump with Iskra starter
On both tractors I remove the starter before working on the pump

Has this one on my 4000 for a while, liked the way it cranked the engine
Down side was the cable and solenoid wire were on the side next to the block, couldn t get to them with the starter mounted
After a few years the bendix went bad and I couldn t get a replacement so I put a Iskra starter back on

It was the starter on the tractor when I bought it at an auction. I'll need to look it over for a part number tomorrow when I can get out to
the barn. What is the difference with the nose?
