Ford 4000 steering pump

Just acquired a Ford 4000 model 4120 serial number 7191. It has the hydraulic cylinders on the steering rods and the lines to the steering box. It is missing the pump and lines to the pump.

My question is where does the pump even mount?

I m thinking of hooking it up to my log splitter hydraulics and just checking stuff out. I can dial the pressure down to 1000psi on it.

Guess I need to spend the big bucks for the repair manual for it.

Two possibilities for the pump. Below the generator/ alternator, should be a round plate this covers the access to mount a factory p/s pump.
that runs off the timing gears. The other would be a pump and rackets that mount under the hood, above the generator. You might contact
Allstate Tractor, they have a wide salvage network, and might have the parts that you need. I don't think I would induce 1000 psi into that
steering system, you might end up with more problems than you currently have.

Your answer is correct for the later 3 cylinder 4000 series tractors, but a 4120 is the ag chassis model in the earlier 4 cylinder 4000 series, and I am pretty sure that all power steering pumps in that series were belt driven and were mounted on the right side at the front of the engine as you're sitting on the tractor.

This is an early model 4 cylinder gas, ag tractor. Except for the steering, it is in remarkable condition. I think the steering box will have to be rebuilt one way or another. The spindles move easily but the steering is rather stiff.

I may remove the hydraulic cylinders and see how stiff it is ad determine if the power steering is actually needed. Does NOT have a bucket on it.

I had a pump go out on an old 4 cylinder. Thought I would be clever and rig up a pump off an automobile from a junk yard. I did and
it wasn't a big deal fabricating a bracket and don't remember about the hose connections. Regardless, the car was a Pinto and
apparently only had one cylinder controlling the steering. With the low RPM 4000 and 2 cylinders it was deathly slow.....but it
worked just fine otherwise.

The pump that originally came on it was an Eaton pump; it was the same as the Eaton pumps came on a lot of the Ford cars and trucks of the same vintage (early 1960s). NAPA, Ebay and others did offer a rebuilding kit for them, as the core was the same with just little differences like the lid and mounting brackets. The pressures were different, even with the difference model tractors.
