Hello all! I recently got myself a project that I've been working on I'm restoring function to an an older tractor (I believe it's either a 63 or 64) and I'm having a difficult time figuring out what this lever on the left side of the tractor in front of the clutch does. Also I cannot find anything about the air cleaner for this, I keep finding the ones with the oil on the bottom but I find it odd that this intake bend has a threaded rod in it. Any input or advice would be greatly appreciated!

The lever is a Sherman over and under.

It's in the low side now. Us the picture as a guide. Makes the four speed a twelve.

Looks like a Sherman auxiliary transmission lever to me. Quite useful. Depending on the type you may have an over, under, or over under drive.

It should have originally had an oil bath air filter. That looks like a previous owner changed it to use some kind of round paper cartridge type of filter that goes over that threaded rod and is probably supposed to be held in place by a nut on the end of that rod. Or maybe there was some sort of housing with a filter element inside of it that was installed on that threaded rod. In either case, that's not the original setup.

There were various Sherman Auxiliary transmissions, step-up, step-down, combo step-up and step-down, and reverser. That handle style was used on the step down and the combo models. The other two used different style handles.

On the sherman trans,,, just remember that it is installed in front of the pto drive and unless its in normal, the pto speed will be lower or higher than you expect..
