Helping a friend with his fordson major diesel tractor. Tractor hasn't been run for years. Started but has a water leak into the base. I wanted to
know: Are these diesel engines wet sleeves? I suggested removing the pan and looking to see if a water leak could be seen around one of the
sleeves. He wants to make the tractor lawn art I think he should repair to running condition

Questions: how to determine where the water leak into the base is occurring He replaced the head gasket but water still leaking into the base.
Are these diesel engines in the fordson major diesel wet sleeves?
What is the sleeve remover size for removal of a sleeve in the fordson major diesel. Wanted to do the work in frame . I have an OTC sleeve puller
but do not have the remover plate for bottom of the sleeve.
Suggestions on how to determine where the water leak is occurring

Fordson Majors are definitely wet sleeve engines. Usually!! You can remove the pan and see where the lower O ring is leaking. A bit of advise; don't just replace one O ring, pull the sleeves and replace them all. Make sure you clean the O ring grooves thoroughly, using a mirror and light, look at them and make sure electralosis hasn't eaten out the groove. If it has, use a bit of high heat silicone to fill the damaged area, then fit the O ring. I have actually used a piece of cotton swab soaked with permatex on our lease tractors, when replacement blocks weren't available, and the tractor was needed.

Skipper !!

Thanks for the information.. Do I need a puller plate to use with my OTC sleeve puller? Do you have the part number of the plate? I do not have a
lathe or I could make a plate

I don't have a part number. We had a piece of 1 plate machined to fit, with a heavy chain attached, and used the overhead electric chain hoist to pull the sleeves. If they were stuck, we would lift until the front tires started to clear the flor, and smack the front axle with a sledge hammer. Or come up from the bottom with a large brass punch and sledge hammer.

I should have added, that they will also occasionally develop pin holes in the liner, from electralasis.

Skipper !!
Thank you. I came up with a piece of 1/2 plate cut and ground to fit bottom of sleeves on my JD 850 to remove the sleeves. A pleasure to talk with you. You as me have learned to improvise and make things work, I am 80 years old now and do not work as well under tractors as I did 40 years ago. I will be able to provide guidance to my fiend

Skipper !!
pin holes due to electrolysis I have seen that problem
Thank you again,
Chris
Knowledge you have, like me, I am sure you learned a lot through experience

I was sooooo lucky to have a Churchill liner puller!!!! I also made one out of a plate turned to size and a piece of threaded rod. Make sure you do not catch the sides of the block, at the bottom, when you pull. Clean around the top of the block when you get them out and use soap when you put them back, should push in with your hands.

Be aware that there are two types of liner, if you put new ones in. The later type had an 'O' ring at the top as well as at the bottom and liners for that block are thicker at the top and will not really fit in the earlier engine.
