Shifting issues

I own a 1960 Dexta. I replaced the main gear shift lever and gear shift housing springs. When the assembly is off, the shafts move freely with a screwdriver. Once the assembly is installed, the main shift lever ties up when shifting through the gears. Any ideas of what s wrong, adjustments that have to be made, or any other problem that might be associated with this condition?

Very often, due to careless shifting, the sides of the semi-ball on the end of the shift lever get worn down, and allow the end to go between
the shift gates. Often this allows the transmission to go into two gears at once. Building up the sides slightly with brazing and filing
them smooth can help correct this problem.

Thank you for the information. Since the shift lever is brand new, the semi ball has no wear, and the problem still exists, I m not sure which direction to go. It doesn t seem like the lever should tie up anymore when shift that lever between gears. It s incredibly frustrating for sure.

Sorry; I missed the fact that you replaced the shift lever. You might try(just for experiment)placing washers at 4 points under the shift
cover and see if that lets it shift. Possibly the lever is mis-made. If that cures it, cut a new gasket out of thicker material. I
recently replaced the entire shift cover on a 4110 Ford, shifts fine, but could not get the neutral safety switch to work more than one time.
Finally put a pedal switch on the clutch. Things from the land of almost right!!!!

I would second what you said Skip, the Land of Nearly Right stretches its wings far and wide. I have suffered from parts that are not correct/poor quality at various prices. Problem is most suppliers seem to use the same manufacturer so the problem lies at source.

I have a 1960 Dexta which was repatriated from New Zealand in a very poor condition, it had a hard life and was battered and bruised so that most panels had to be replaced or repaired and it is still ongoing but now runs and pulls like a dream. The one thing that has not needed repair up to the moment, (touch wood), is the gear shift, all in there is in very good condition and is all original. Pretty good for over 50 years old. Careful shifting and not trying to shift on the move is the answer to many wear problems IMHO.

Thank you for the follow up and information. From the time since your first post and follow up, my dad had the same thought and cut an additional gasket to increase the thickness and spacing. It has improved the shift greatly. He is going to fiddle with it a bit more with other gasket materials to hopefully refine the result. Thanks again for the information and advice! Much appreciated sir!

I am figuring out that you are both quite correct. I m lucky that my tractor has been pretty well taken care of over the years. A few items need addressed, but as you said, for being over 50 years old, it s to be expected! Thank you for the response sir.
