FORDSON POWER MAJOR IDENTIFICATION

G'DAY I OWN A FORSON POWER MAJOR

IT HAS BEEN GOOD TO ME SINCE I BOUGHT IT ABOUT A YEAR AGO HOWEVER IT HAS BEGUN TO DEVELOP A SEVERE KNOCK SO I HAVE DECIDED I WILL RESTORE IT FROM THE INSIDE OUT BUT OTHER THEN KNOWING ITS A POWER MAJOIR THANKS TO THE BRANDING ON THE ENGINE COVER I AM HAVING TROUBLE identifying THE ENGINE NUMBER TO proceed WITH ORDERING A REBUILD KIT. I HAVE FOUND THE NUMBERS EIADKN6015 BUT THAT IS ALL I HAVE FOUND VIDEOS explaining A PLATE BY THE AIR INTAKE BUT MINE EITHER NEVER HAD ONE HERE OR HAS SINCE LOST IT. ANY ASSISTANCE AND guidance WOULD BE appreciated

KIND REGARDS LUKE

Hi Luke, your engine number is stamped under Number 1 Injector.

It may also help to get a few casting codes from different cast parts, the easiest one to see is near the gear selector plate. It will look like J 24 C which will help to confirm the year of manufacture and the model. These tractors are 60+ so many bits might have been changed in its lifetime.

Thankyou for replying to my post i went looking again for the engine number this time below the injector of the raised plate as you mentioned this appears to be blank

i did find the following numbers

N2 near the flywheel left side
L6Z near the clutch peddle

995203A on the right side above the PTO housing ( behind the engaging lever )

do any of these numbers sound familiar to you

cheers Luke

The numbers you have found mean nothing apart from L6Z, they are mould numbers and are the same on most tractors. If there is no number on the engine, try looking behind the starter, on the flange of the engine where it joins the clutch housing.

More numbers like the L6Z are important as they will confirm what I am going to say, you do not have a Power Major from that number, it is for a September 6th 1956 Fordson Major. Is your throttle under the steering wheel or down on the right side beside the instrument panel? Do you have a temp. gauge, oil pressure gauge and amp meter on the lower panel?

Many things can happen over 60 years and parts were compatible from 1951 to 1964 in certain areas so that is why the casting codes like L6Z are important. Check under the exhaust manifold, just above the dynamo/alternator for another one, also on the cylinder head on the exhaust manifold side. Front axle should have one, so will each trumpet housing and the rear axle. If an L and Z are in them it will definitely be a 1956, if more end in C it will be 1959 and the clutch/gearbox housing will have been replaced at some time.

Fordson Major was first of the series, about 35 hp. Easily identified by the throttle control being low and to the right of the gauge panel.

Power Major, if I remember correctly, about 43 up. Gauges right below the steering wheel, throttle control right below the steering wheel.

Super Major, about 48 hp.. Have dry disc brakes and differential lock, among other changes.

Power Major was rated at 51hp. Early Super up to 1963 was 51hp and the New Performance Super was 54hp in English measurements. Fordson Major Diesel went up to 43 hp when they did a load of modifications in 1955-56. Was known as the Modified Engine.
