Kohler Magnum knock

Blowing snow with a Ariens GT18. Everything's fine til I idled it down and the engine started knocking. Still blows snow at full speed no knock. Before I total it, is there something other than a rod that could cause a knock at idle?

photo similar to my engine.

A loose flywheel or drive pulley could knock.

Carbon between the head and piston can cause a knock, as well.

A couple of years ago I had a knocking (probably worse at idle, too) Onan in a Deere 318 and that's what it was.

That Onan and your Kohler are very similar in size and design.

Surprisingly, the official service manual doesn't list carbon as a source of knocking. You can check it out/download it at the link below and check out the troubleshooting section.

I had the vertical shaft version of that motor in an Ariens tractor. Ran great! Never any issues with it. Idling it sounded like a Harley Davidson. Great that you found
the issue, easy low cost fix too.
