Went to buy an air cleaner for my garden tractor at the big box store. $15 in the garden section, $7 for a Fram in automotive. :?

A few years ago he oil filter for a Kohler$5.00, was
twice the price as one for a Dodge car $1.50 A cross
reference in the back of the parts book, showed them
to be identical.

Twenty years ago a small spin-on satellite oil filter on my air compressor cost $180! Service interval 250 hours. Turns out was nothing special, easily substituted with a larger filter costing 1/12 the price.
Researching specifications and applications showed that filter was only used on my air compressor.

I wouldn't put a Fram filter on anything I valued.

The oil filter for my Bad Boy is $23.00 in NAPA brand. Higher in the Carquest brand. I can go to Orschealns store buy a Kohler filter for $15 they have a
no name brand for $10.

Just talking to a neighbor this morning about a little 2' step stool that increased in price by 60% in 2 years.
Back in the 50s & 60s, I think the local businesses generally operated on a cost plus basis. Something like cost plus 15%.
Now days, it's what the market will bare. Or, the most they can get a sucker to pay.
I think a major share of inflation is price gouging.

The foam filter should have some oil on it. Too much and it will wet the paper filter, which is not considered good. I try to go
easy with the oil.

Dunno what engine he has, I know the instructions for the Briggs Vanguard twins stated NOT to oil the foam sleeve back some years ago when I was using and servicing a couple of them.

NOT sure what current thinking is there, or what other mfg's may suggest.

I remember I found once that some oil will break down the foam rubber and it doesnt fit very tight after a while making it useless.

When I go to clean the foam filter, washing it out with soap and water, squeezing it dry in the palm of my hand there is no oil on it.
Since the mfgr. figured that was correct, I follow their example. I would think that oil and dirt make a paste that prematurely clogs
the pores in the foam.

I have a 2019 Toro with a Toro engine and a 2021 Bad Boy with Kohler Kt740. The
Toro manual says nothing about oiling the foam. The Koehler manual says to lightly oil
the foam.
