I could use a little help troubleshooting my ZTR. I started it on Sunday and it sounded off. I first thought the exhaust manifold gasket was leaking. It seems fine. I then let run a couple minutes like normal before moving/ engaging the PTO. That almost killed the engine. I checked the fuel pump, its feeding the carb. Checked the plugs, both looked good, not wet or black. Checked the deck, all spindles and pulleys turn fine. I took the hydraulic pump belt off, same results. It shows around 800 hrs. but probably has close to double that. I am hoping to find a small item as I am not going to put much money into a 20 year old mower. Any ideas? Thanks Jeff

Z737 doesn't come up on the DEERE parts site???

My GUESS is that you are working with a V-twin engine and either one of the ignition modules has failed or a valve pushrod has bent and/or dropped out of place due to a valve sticking while after it was shut down previously.

When our Husqvarna sounded off this summer it needed a new air filter, I had neglected it! But I would check the valves on yours. You don't say what kind of engine you have?

The 737 used a Kawasaki FH680D, 23 hp engine..

Both intake and exhaust valve lash should be set between [b:23bf691362].004 - .006[/b:23bf691362].

Should go ahead and install new plugs. Just because they show good color doesn't mean they are good under combustion pressure.

I have a z920a. One coil went bad resulting in mower running on one cylinder. Didn't sound terrible or vibrate but low on power and started a little slow. Get a spark tester and see if you have spark on both cylinders.

If it's a coil and if this is correct one 21171-7034 , they $23.99 w/shipping at Ebay. Dealer is more $$$$.

I am in agreement with the others on a stuck valve or a burnt valve that can build just enough compression to sound OK without load but not generating any real compression. When you engage the blades the lack of compression becomes apparent with it trying to run on basically one cylinder.
