Please keep an eye out for a starter for my bolens huskey 750 lawn tractor - I got the tractor from my father in law and the starter is not attached although all wiring is - maybe it stopped working and it was removed - tractor starts ok by pulling with rope on main front pulley but tired of doing this....searching e bay now and then but so far no luck.
If you have one, or see one for sale please let me know.

Thanks,

Lee

It used a very common Delco-Remy starter generator. Easy to find and used on many other tractor brands. 750 was one of the few tube-frame Bolens with a aluminum 7 horse Briggs & Stratton engine. Briggs engine 170402 or 170401.
Starter generators were common during that time period because they can be easily added to rope-start engines.

If you don't need it to look original, you can also put a regular starter motor on it - instead of the starter generator - but that requies a different flywheel. It also leaves you with a starter but no charing system.

Call you local repair shop the rebuilds starters, generators or alternators to see if they have a S/G for your tractor you will need the Make & model number of the engine since some S/G"s turn CCW, but mine turns CW used on this old Wards tractor. Its painted black in this picture. I had it rebuilt last year with new bearings & brushes and they machined the armature.
Call this toll free number to see if they have a spare Delco S/G. Hal

Thank you all for your help - yes, it is the older Bolens Huskey (tube frame - will get info later when frost burns off) - I am sure it is the starter/generator type as it is belt driven and I do not think it has a separate charging system - I would be interested to know how this works - does the battery drive the generator to start the engine until it turns over and the generator then becomes a charging system rather than a starter?
Actually - herre is a picture:

Final question - I am assuming this is a 12 volt system?

Thank you for your advice.

Have you been to the Sonny's Bolens site?

If you haven't, it's a worthwhile "surf" for any Bolens owner.
