2520 diesel solenoid

my 2520 diesel won't start from the key but you can short it out at the starter and it will, so checking with test light the relay or solenoid on the side under the dash is hot on one post but when you turn the key to start it the other side of the post does not light up so is this relay bad or do i have another problem? thanks again.

Does the auxiliary starter relay ''click'' when you turn the key to ''START''.

If it DOES and does not pass current from the ''HOT'' stud to the ''output stud'' it is ''bad''.

If NO ''click'' the little solenoid COULD have failed, or the key switch, or the neutral safety start switch or something in the wiring.

Just BE CAREFUL and be SURE it is ''PARK'' while troubleshooting this!

the key switch is good because i checked it on my other 2520 and the small relay does not click at all, it doesn't have any safety switches on it and i always
make sure it's in park, safety first! so maybe the small relay is bad?

With your test light, check if the small (coil) terminal on the auxiliary start solenoid gets power when you turn the key to ''START''

no sir the small or the large post lights up only the main big post on top of the relay.

If I'm understanding you correctly there's no power getting from the ''S'' terminal on the key switch to the small solenoid?

If that is TRUE and the switch is GOOD it must be a wiring issue, perhaps in the area of the neutral start safety switch that you say is nonexistent or has been bypassed?

I ASSUME we are working with the older 2520, NOT the newer 2520 CUT?

this is correct so where would the neutral safety switch be located so I can see if the wires are tied together?

Neutral safety start switch is located on RH side of trans case behind RH battery.

Had a similar problem on my 2510 a few years ago. Solved it by cleaning the solonoid and reversing one of the contact points because it had become worn on one side.

(quoted from post at 15:49:53 03/27/23) thank you guys for all your help, I'll check there.

Check operation of the relay in photo. My guess is it lost it's ground or power connection.

I haven't taken the cowl off to see yet but after checking everything I knew to check I wiggled the gear shifter around in park and it started so I'm assuming
there is a safety switch in the shifter area?

Follow the shift rods down the right side of the tractor to the levers they attach to on the transmission case. The neutral safety switch will be screwed into the side of the transmission case in the area near the pivot point of one of the levers.
