Massey Ferguson 50

We just rebuilt the engine in our Massey 50 and replaced the governor. Weve got two problems now:

1. We have a leak out the back of the engine. We put a new rear main seal in when we rebuilt it. This is on the Continental gas. Any ideas where its coming from? Could it be the bearing cap seals?

2. The governors dont seem to be responding as fast as they should. Weve adjusted everything how they say but weve had to extend the rod from the carb to governor lever to get it to not run wide open all the time. Ideas on this?

Anything to try would be greatly appreciated!

Did you pack the rope seal in tight on both sides of the rear main bearing cap?

If you take the throttle rod off the governor arm and manually control engine RPM, does the governor arm react? Did you replace the governor assembly under the front cover with new?

We have not done the rope seals yet. Ill get a new pan gasket and try those. (I really dont want to do those but if that fixes it, then okay.)

We replaced the governor with a new one. Ill try working the lever by itself tonight or tomorrow and let you know what I come up with.

Sometimes that rope seal needs to soak up some oil to properly seal, maybe give it a bit. Did you cut the ends of the seal to make it fit. I try to avoid cutting the ends just try to work it all in. Make sure you have installed all the springs properly on the governor linkage, I have screwed that up.

Okay, we shortened the rod from the carb to the governor and we do have governor action. However, now we dont have as much throttle control as we would like. We start at a low rpm but it doesnt take long before it is sped up faster than we really want. Any idea how to slow how fast it accelerates?

How could I have installed the spring wrong? Ive been trying to figure out if something like that could have happened but I dont hardly see how

You say you rebuilt the engine, was it a complete rebuild with crank checked/turned new bearings etc? How long ago was the rebuild?

I would go through every step in the manual again to adjust all the external governor springs and linkages. If you have verified the governor arm coming out of the side of the front cover reacts to changing engine RPM then something in the external linkages probably isn't correct. Are you using the Massey Ferguson service book or the I&T shop manual?

We are using the IT book and the owners manual for the tractor. The only think we havent done is adjust the u clamp. Our tach works but I know it isnt right, reading about 1000 rpm when it has to be down around the 400 mark. Im working to get this figured out before I try adjusting the clamp. Can I use this adjustment to slow it down? Our governor arm was very worn so we got a new one and replaced it as well as other new parts in the linkages because ours was so worn and welded up.

To answer you wither question, we just got it put back together about a month ago, maybe six weeks. We did not pull the crank, just sleeves, pistons and bushings. We did put new seals everywhere we could (I really dont like splitting them but we did).

You may have nicked the new rear seal or have a damaged/missing gasket behind the oil seal retainer. Either that or it is the rope seal either side of the rear main cap.

Here is the governor instructions from the Massey Ferguson service book. Much the same as the I&T but goes into a little more detail. Not sure if this is the same in the owners manual, can't find that right now.

Okay, that actually says to use the u-bolt to get the top speed within the range. My books say it a little different and made me think it wasnt a big deal. This will give me a place to go once I get the tach slowed down some. This generator is not original to the tractor and I have one coming that is supposed to be. Hopefully that will help with the tach.

Thanks for the help. Normally I can make sense out of the books but for some reason this one has seemed to really confuse me.

Thought I would let you know, even though I dont know for sure where I have the RPM set, I did loosen the clamp and it is much closer now. I can pull the throttle all the way down and it is about wide open. Thanks for the help with this, I had about decided that was the problem but you post made me realize that it was were I needed to go. Thanks again!

Now if I can get the oil leak stopped. Waiting on a new pan gasket first and then Ill be ready to try and replace the rope in the bearing cap.
