No valve caps with rebuild kit

Ordered engine rebuild kit for Massey ferguson 202 z134
engine , had valves installed by machine shop when I got
around to installing engine I noticed there were no valve
caps with kit, old valves had solid top intake valves and
exhaust valves had a hole in top for different caps .New
ones had no caps and all of the new valves were solid on
top with no holes on exhaust, have no clue what to do if
you dont need caps I wish they would have said
something in kit, I will leave photos

As long as the valve stem installed height is correct no need for them caps. New valves would have longer stems. Put your rockers on and see how things look on the adjustment nuts .,,, As in close to before. Or phone the shop they can tell you also why.

It depends on what material the valves are made from, the original valves were made of softer metal (like stainless steel) which require a hardened "lash cap" to keep the rocker arms from "mushrooming" the top of the valves which increases the valve lash over time. The new valves are either made from a different metal that don't require them, or the "lash cap" is made into the valve tip itself.

I hope I have those harder steel valves , I noticed the
exhaust valves are shorter than the intake valves, do you
know anything about that , thanks for your help

I agree with rustred that if the installed spring height is set to spec then it should be okay. But not necessarily, that spec would be for factory valves. With an aftermarket valve although it should be a direct replacement for a stock item that is not a known fact. You might inquire of the machine shop if the install height of the exhaust and intake are different. If so this could account for the height variations you are seeing with your straight edge across the valves. Do you still have the old valves? A little too late now to measure the ones in there. The suggestion to check the rocker geometry with these valves is a good one. Aside from having enough adjustment to set lash the greatest concern is where the rocker is setting on the stem when the valve is fully open. If it is much more than a third of the diameter of the valve from the valve centerline it would cause me concern. I see YT sells caps but they say they are for the intake, see link. The pictures are not the best but it does not look like they are the type with the center nub. If the orientation of the rocker on the exhaust would be of concern to me I would consider putting the caps on the exhaust valves to take up some of the clearance and run it.

Let's assume you did not change anything in the rocker shaft when you removed it. Set it back on and see if that 1/4 inch difference still exists, like Rustred suggests. It will probably be tighter to the longer, new valves, but if the head is OK the way it is, the tightness will be similar on both intake, and exhaust. It might even be visually about the same. steve
