Massey Harris Ferguson

My MHF 50 has a live PTO it is a 1956 model year.

I did not know Massey Harris had live ptos. I have four 44 specials , none on them in 1956. Need to check on the 444. But Ferguson should have lpt.

The MH 33 and 44 could have the LPTO option that used the right side differential hand clutch to stop the forward travel and keep the PTO running. The MHF 50 had the two stage flywheel clutch LPTO, first stage stopped the forward or reverse travel, and second stage stopped the PTO. The 50 is more user friendly as you can stop the ground travel and change direction while PTO keeps running. That can't be done on the differential clutch models as using the foot clutch will stop both ground travel AND PTO.

My father in law's Massey Harris 44 had the differential clutch which allowed the tractor to stop while allowing the PTO to run, but you could not change gears. After he installed a TSC over bore kit that option had to be disabled as it would slip. I used it to plow snow with a front blade the first few years after I built my house. It had chains and a wide front, it was a tank. My Massey Harris 50 has a two-stage clutch. I guess you would call the Massey Harris 50 a Massey Harris Ferguson.

Massey Harris and Ferguson merged in 1953, and after that Massey Harris Ferguson name was on the serial number tag only. The Massey-Ferguson name HOOD name began sometime in 1958. Both Massey Harris and Ferguson had separate dealers awhile after the merger.

My Neighbor owns a couple of Ferguson 35's. Four cylinder Diesels. Assembled in England and shipped to Canada.

His are RED in colour.

I have a 1958 red Ferguson TO-35 with the Standard Motors 23C four cylinder diesel engine too, similar to the Gray/Gold one in the photo. MF used that engine until they bought Perkins, then the 35 got the A3.152 three cylinder diesel engine that my Massey-Ferguson 35 has, with the first year Multi=Power twelve speed transmission. It's red/flint gray like my 1958 is. The Perkins starts cold MUCH better than the 23C did.

I think that is correct rustred. There was Ferguson on Massey Harris tractors though. And I find it interesting that they even changed the stampings on the castings when they where in business together.

.

Live PTO came starting on 1955 Deluxe TO35 models. The standard option was a single clutch. TO20, TO30 were all single clutch.

I have a May 1955 Green Belly, a Sept 1955 industrial, and a 1958 silver/red. All with live PTO.

I suspect the 1958 and certainly the MF35 replacement all had live PTO.

Our TO35 was the hardest working tractor on the farm when I was a kid. It was the backup for every other tractor from baling to plowing.

The 35 could also have the single clutch/transmission driven PTO just like the TO-20/30 had. I've even seen a 135 model with the single clutch too instead of the
LPTO/IPTO option, which I wouldn't give two cents for after using LPTO or IPTO.

i dont think so, this is a fergie while they could have the harris , i dont think harris had anything t do with ferguson. i will need to check the 444 as thats the last harris and am sure there is no fergie on it.

Your right rustred. I dont think youll find any Ferguson on a 444. If I remember correctly it was only a few models for just a few years that had all three names on them. I read it in one of my books a long time ago and my mind is a bit foggy. It had something to do with the Ferguson designed hydraulics and three point hitch system which was different I think than on the 444. But again not sure about that.My Massey Harris 50 is definitely branded with all three names but not on the tin work. None of my other Massey Harris tractors have anything Ferguson on them. Till of course we get up to the actual Massey Ferguson tractors that I have. Have a good weekend rustred.
