M602/4 brakes

I'm slowly working my way through restoring a 604 and decided the pedals need to come off for cleaning up and priming. Worked out that I need to loosen the jam nuts to remove the brake pull rods in order to get the pedals off but they aren't easy to get at. Tried a couple of different approaches but have now modified a spanner that should do the trick - will find out tomorrow.

As usual one thing leads to another. After removing the brake covers I found a bit of oil in the bottom of the housings. Not a lot and the brakes were working fine before I started the restoration. Hard to tell where it's coming from. The seals are the obvious culprit but looking up behind the brake pack with a mirror it doesn't look like they are leaking. I wonder whether the gaskets have been weeping, but that would seem unusual?

I'm now thinking I should pull the brakes anyway to be on the safe side but finding the IT manual virtually useless in this regard. All looks a bit challenging. The clevis pin has its split pin on the inside - very difficult to get at.

Do you have to remove the links before the brake pack will come out? Normally, how difficult is it to slide it off the splines? Perhaps it isn't too hard and I might be overthinking it, but will greatly appreciate any advice the experts can offer.

Thanks in advance.

Not hard to work on. Discs just slide off. Either take off clevis or pin inside so adjuster plate can be removed.

Threaded adjusting rod needs to be removed like you noticed to get the actuator out. I usually just use the double outer nuts to my advantage to get the adjusting rod loose from the actuator rather than trying to reach in and get that nut broke loose inside the housing. Your seals are leaking causing the oil accumulation in the housing. That inner plate that retains the seals has a lip and drain machined into it so the oil seepage doesn't get on the brake discs from what I recall.

Meant to say thanks for the advice, it was very helpful. Turned out to be a rather challenging job, though. Left side was pretty easy but the right tested my patience. I couldn't turn the pull rod using the outside double nuts, and the jam nut wouldn't budge either. Ended up soaking it for a few days and eventually got it moving. The inner disc was the real challenge - stuck fast on the splines. Several days of spraying with Inox and then some heat finally got it moving.
The discs were well and truly covered with oil. They cleaned up well with a very light pass with a Stripit disc on the angle grinder. There was still a bit of oil coming out but a propane torch seemed to deal with that. They look as though they could go back in but I am concerned that more oil could be drawn out when they heat up. However, when I hit them with the torch now nothing seems to change. Any thoughts?
