Towing a trailer with 3 point hitch

I have a Super 55 without a drawbar, so I've bought a drawbar to use with the 3 point hitch but have been having a heck of a time dealing with the hitch swinging when I back up, making it all but impossible to back a trailer into some locations. Does anyone have any advice?

I don't think I have the original chains/stabilizers on there. Right now there are chains just held in by a nut going into the PTO mount, and some googling has led me to believe there should be a bracket there that the chain mounts to. Any idea if I can retrofit a fixed drawbar onto it like I've seen on some 550s? I believe it's a 1956 if that makes any difference.

Thanks so much for any help you can offer!

It looks like there were 2 different ways
of mounting it on a 55, depending on the
serial number. Maibach sells one for a 55
or 550. Also see the originals on
marketplace or Craigslist from time to
time. You can look at AGCO parts books and
see the different way they attached and
see if your 55 has the brackets.

They made stabilizer bars that attached where the top
link does and go to the 3 point arms to keep lift arms
from raising and cuts side to side movement when using
a drawbar on the lift arms. I have a set Id sell if I can find
them. Should be able to get a pair at most any farm store.

You couldn't prove it by me, but I think the Ford swinging drawbars will bolt up to an Oliver. Available anywhere,
including this site I would imagine.

Another possible problem is, if the 3 point hitch does not have down pressure, a trailer tongue can push the hitch arms up when loading, braking or backing.

This is what you need plus sway chains

The top 2ends hook where your top link goes making the
drawer fixed. They can be adjusted to the height you
want your drawbar. Sway chairs keep it from moving
sideways

I think what you need is stabilizer bars that go from a pin below the fender bracket to the lower pin on your drawbar. If you use the stabilizers that mount to the top link holes you can not lift the 3-point. Tractor supply list the lower stabilizer bars.
CountyLine Stabilizer Arm Universal stabilizer arm measures 31-9/16 in. Pin hole size: 7/8 in.
The stabilizer arms I have are a little long so I can only use one but it helps with my 3-point blade.

Thanks for the information, everyone!

I need to do some measurements and looking to see what will work best for my tractor- a fixed drawbar seems like the ideal solution to avoid the tongue forcing the 3pt hitch up, but I may just need to do the stabilizers for now. With just the side stabilizers on, and not the additional one going up to the top link, can you still move the 3 pt hitch?

Looks like i will need to find some brackets for my tractor in any case as it does not have anything on the body ready to bolt to that I can see.

As I read his post, he is using a drawbar on the 3 point arms and when trying to back something up, the lift arms raise. The only safe way to use a drawbar on the 3 point arms is to have stabilizer bars that run from the 3 point arms to where the top link connects. I would sell the ones pictured in my earlier post. I may have misunderstood what saywhat wanted to do. I assumed that he would want to lift the 3-pont arms while moving the trailer. This can safely be done with the stabilizer arms that run parallel with the 3 point lower arms.
