What Did You Do With Your Green Tractor Today?

Borrowed this conversation starter idea from another discussion forum. (Not JD)

Saturday I drove it in my first tractor trot.

Today I had it hooked up to the 4240 plow to make some setup adjustments.

Changed the 1850 from one way cylinder back to 2 way. Started changing the condenser on the 1550 and ended up puling the distributor and cleaning and lubeing it, new points and condenser and going for a test drive.

Had the gas tank off the 880 and am cleaning up the paint/surface rust. I see it has scrawled on the bottom 'S88 dsl' so that's interesting. Yes, it has the cleanout on the bottom and a copper line
(breather?) on the back near the top. That's never been hooked up.

The line at the top of the tank is for diesel fuel return from injection pump. If your tractor is gas, plug the hole with a pipe fitting. It doesn't need a breather, the gas cap should be vented

Worked on getting the front axle loosened so I can narrow the width to match the back. (Why it wasn t the same to begin with is kind of a long story)
Had tried to do this a couple winters ago with the 4 ft pipe wrench and sledge hammer but gave up.
Did the old remove pins and put a smaller diameter bolt in. That loosened up the left side. Should have tried driving it more to give the other side more of a chance to loosen. But I got too excited about getting the one side out and next thing you know I had the front end up on blocks. Tried using a chain from the back axle to the front and tightening with a ratchet binder. Didn t do the trick to twist it until I swung the sledge a few times. Then it was the 4 ft pipe wrench in combination with the chain and binder attached to the 826 frame (parked next to it) to pull it out.

Last couple of days were spent cleaning up insides and outsides of axle tubes. Got them coated with anti-seize and back on. It wasn t until then that I realized the axle adjustment holes are on three inch spacing instead of two. This 77 doesn t have the big cast hubs in front that allow for more adjustment. So instead of being on center with the rears, it is more like inside edge in line with inside edge. Since the whole exercise was to take a step toward getting setup for the plow, I think it s better this way than the way it was.

Shortened tie rods and did toe-in adjustment. Touch up paint next.

I ve had a little bit of engine surging when first starting up and at low throttle in 6th gear. Adjusted the
governor rod, extending it two turns. Seems to have done the trick.

Was working for the last couple of days getting sheet metal parts for my 826 prepped for painting. Finally had enough of doing that and since it was such a nice day, I took the 77 for a couple laps around the neighborhood.

Planning to use the 77 and 4240 plow at our club’s plow day in April. Tractor had one set of wheels weights on the inside of the rim. No fluid in tires. Picked up a couple more sets of weights last fall. Got one set cleaned up when we had some warm weather a few weeks ago and could work on them outside. Painted them up and got them mounted yesterday.IMG_0562.jpeg

Charts show (just) water in those tires would add just under 400 lbs per tire. At 140 lbs. per weight, I should probably go ahead and get the other set on there to be comparable.

Does anyone have any experiences to share about weighting a 77 to pull a 2x14” plow? (Silt loam soil)
