Paint/sealer inside homemade flatback?

I'm making a steel flatback for my 2-cylinder. Does the inside need painted or sealed with anything or leave it bare steel?

If so, what do you use?

Thanks

I believe it takes a special paint to survive in an oily environment. I've seen it used but don't know where the guy got it.

I don't see why the inside of the steel plate would NEED to be painted, the inside of many tractor castings IS painted, one of the reasons is to encapsulate any ''foundry sand'' that may be clinging to the cast iron and possibly seal an possible pinholes that might ''weep'' oil.

If it IS desired to paint it, ''Glyptal'' is what's commonly used, it can be bought on Amazon, from Eastwood, etc. etc..

Thanks for all the replies.

That's kinda what I was thinking (that it
didn't need anything) but I wanted another
opinion. It's obviously not going to rust
inside. I didn't know why the castings all
had a coating though. What you said makes
sense.

You will find that any condensation in there will rust the bare metal. Ever take an old transmission apart and see all the rust that is on the gears and shafts?
