Air Compressor Pressure Switch

I have access to an IR compressor that came out of the heating system at my employer. It was the backup compressor and basically has zero hours. It is a 3 phase system and I would need to convert it to single phase to use it. Swapping the motor isn't a big deal. In terms of the pressure switch, can I use the same one and just not use 1 set of contactors?
 
Should be able to use the same switch. If I remember right it would have 3 sets of points and if your going to a 220 single phase system you would just use 2 sets instead of 3. I use a 3 phase breaker box in my shop and left one leg unhooked and it has worked fine for over a decade now
 
Works for me.... The CRITICAL things are the HP and Voltage and Current ratings and since you will only require 2 of the 3 contacts (and I doubt you will be using much if any higher voltage plus the switch likely already has more then necessary voltage rating) if you convert to single phase, so long as the HP or current rating of the switch isnt exceeded YOURE OFF TO THE RACES........

If it came from a three phase system it will probably have a three phase motor starter on it with overload heaters. The pressure switch would only be breaking power to the motor starter coil. You may have to change two of the overload heaters to match the higher amp draw for the single phase motor. The pressure switch would not have to be changed. Look at the horsepower rating on the starter to see if it is rated to handle a single phase motor of the size you are going to use. If it was operating on 440/480 three phase and you are going to go to 220/240 single phase than you may have to change the starter. DH
 
One more thing to check. If it does have a magnetic motor
starter check and see what voltage the coil is. It could be
anywhere from 24V to 480V. Not too likely 240 or 480.
