A few weeks ago I was mowing next to a industrial building and my flail mower picked up a rock, and cracked a window. The window is 4ft 4 in x 6 ft. The glass is called Viracon. I got the estimate today for 1,485.00 Sounds a little high to me, but what can I do? I have 500 deductable, so I guess I am going to turn it over to my insurance co.In all my years with the same insurance co I haven't had a claim. Just another day in the neighborhood. Stan

Did you see it hit the window?Maybe it was already cracked.Never heard of a flair mower
throwing anything. That's the idea of a flail mower,it doesn't throw stuff.

I didn't think flail mowers threw things ether. Someone outside heard it, as well as people inside. I can't get out of this one, as much as I would like. Stan

(quoted from post at 03:28:22 05/21/11) Just another example of americans screwing other americans.

How is that??? If he broke it, and I'm not saying he did, then he is responsible. Pretty simple.

I don"t know where your from but, at one time or another Americans most likely guaranteed your freedom with their blood, supported your weakling government, propped up your psuedo socialsist economy with our productivity and, in general, ensured you were free to bad mouth us.

Very well said. Bad mouth Americans, burn our flag, and then at the first opportunity do the illegal imigration thing and move to America to live and prosper and cheat on your taxes.

Viracon is the manufacturer, find out what type of glazing it is, you can price same for material, though they are a large MFR, to get one piece, could be weeks or months, I used to deal with them all the time. Replacing glazing can be involved, and you risk breaking the new piece, you also have to safely take apart the glazing stops and remove the broken glazing safely, I've done extensive work in the metal and glass industry, we used to purchase trailer loads from Viracon and used to specify their products in our custom metal windows for commercial buildings.

I've replaced glass on new jobs many times and often times for 1 piece the price was $10,000, 7-8 years ago. We always ordered a spare on these high dollar repairs in case of breakage, never happened, I always turned the spare over to the building owner for attic stock. Often times commercial buildings will be supplied with attic stock (spares) maybe they have some on hand.

I would imagine without knowing the glazing type, to get that one piece from Viracon is easily $500+, then add labor, to remove, replace, insurance, tax, profit and overhead, that price may not be far off, thing is, if they want Viracon to provide the same exact glazing, they are not cheap, they manufacture high quality material.

For window that sized in an industrial building - that doesn't sound that high - -especially if that includes installation.

What would really tick you off if the rock only chipped the glass (no crack) and they insisted on replacing it for that price.

Look at the bright side- replacement plus labor of the cheapest 4 X 6 window on the planet is going to more than $500 (in a commercial building). And if its your first claim ever, it will have no effect on your rate. So just smile, and move on.
