Bob Hoover was Chuck Yeager's back-up during the Bell X-1 sound barrier project in October, 1947. Chuck Yeager cracked some ribs the night before his sound barrier flight. If Yeager had been unable to fly that day, Hoover may well have been the first to fly through the sound barrier.
