My husband was unloading hay and the front wheels stopped driving correctly and then one fell off. He thinks it might be a king pen? Has anyone had this happen and how did you repair it?

I'm afraid this is one of those situations where you just have to see what broke, and either repair of replace it.

I assume it's a MFWD since you say the front wheels stopped driving.... If that's the case it could be a bearing failure or simply broken bolts in the ring gear inside the hub. That's not to say that the king pins couldn't drop out but I think it's very unlikely.
Hub failures on those things are expensive. This one sounds particularly so...
A picture would say a thousand words right now.

I've only been around a few NH hubs. One screwed from lack of oil. And two broke right off. The one was off a TM135. It had a bad seal and was leaking oil. Somebody figures somebody else topped it up, and vice versa, and it fails. Other one was a 5635. I can only assume it was overloaded cause one side broke and then the other a year later. The hub broke off the main shaft. The ring nut was in the hub as well as part of the shaft.
