How to ship heavy tractor parts

I occasionally have someone ask me to ship them a part that is too heavy to go by mail and I have not yet found an affordable option for doing that. I have heard of Uship but have not tried it yet. Does anyone have any experiences or advice to share on how to ship heavy stuff (like palletized engine blocks or transmission cases, for instance). I have a tractor with a loader and forks so I I should be able to lift pallets into a truck. Thanks very much for any input.

Might save yourself some stress and liability if you tell the customers to organize shipping themselves. You palletize, wrap, etc and give them the weight and deminsions. They pay the bill and you just load the stuff if necessary. You are responsible til ithits the truck and they can handle damage claims if any themselves.

Depends on your customer. For instance, I sent out an engine to be rebuilt. The rebuilder stated he had a Yellow freight depot nearby that he used. I also have a yellow freight depot nearby so I palleted the engine, loaded into back of pickup and delivered it to my yellow freight depot - backed up to their ramp and they unloaded with forktruck. When the engine arrived at his depot he went to pick it up. When the rebuild was finished we reversed the procedure. Worked out swell. I"m sure you"ll get other ideas too - good luck!

Back when I was actively selling on fleabay I occasionally needed to do this.

Best way is to get associated with a couple of LTL (Less than Truck Load) carriers. You don't need a depot close by just make sure the trucks are working in your area. I used Lakeville mostly.

It is best to find one that has a dispatcher you can talk to on the phone. Classes of freight are crucial. Depends on the item but different stuff will have different classes. It helps to have a fork lift to load and it is helpful for your customers to have a business with forktruck to unload on the other end. I use the local elevator when I am receiving shipments.

You should be able to schedule pickup down to the day at least.

I have used a local trucking firm who added a garden tractor to a load but you need a customer who is set up on the other end or it can be a huge PIA for the driver, don't ask how I know this.

I have used Fed-ex freight. If you are a non-business, they have highly reduced rates for LTL shipment for individuals. Though I guess it helps I live near a bigger city with a freight hub.
