New Trailer!

Just got this done and out of the shed. Started with a $10 soccer goal and I used that for the frame. It will haul my Honda and also get pulled by it so I even made a place to hold the plug and safety chains when not in use. HEMI ORANGE, or Case orange, take your pick.

Nice job there !!I like your idea of the places for the plug and safety chains.. beats digging them out of the mud or snow .

real nice job...not sure where you are but our wonderfull Tex DOT pencil pushers made it illegal to weld safety chains on...i dunno if any other states went along with it...just a heads up

I've got a tilt-bed car hauler, and no place to put the license on the back, so have had the plate turned sideways and bolted to the fender.

When I went to get license this year, the cute little gal said she noticed I had a tilt trailer, did I want the "little plate?" Turns out they have small plates, just a little larger than a motorcycle plate, so it fits on the fender horizontally. Don't know if your state has them.

Beautiful job on the trailer.

Thanks, Nebraska took away our nice small trailer plates a few years ago. Now they are easy to read, if you can find anywhere to put them. I see many bolted to the fender.

Thanks, I think we are okay to weld them on in Nebraska. The rules that I read don't say bolted on only. I may know why they want them bolted.....poor welding! I saw one pulled off of a trailer this spring and there was a big, tough looking weld on a 3/8" inch chain and maybe two 1/16" spots of penetration made it to the hitch!!!!!!!!!! I don't think the welder cleaned the paint off of the hitch before welding. The guy that welded it brags what a great welder he is. Hope someone showed that one to him!

Custer County, right? Howdy from Seward County. I've always liked the town of Broken Bow. We have good friends there.

I got my big plate to fit on my trailer, but the expiration sticker is on the wrong end. It's hidden unless you hunker down and look for it.

That's what I thought when I looked at it too! Actually Adams county #14. Hard to see the 1 unless you squat down or back away further. BB is a really cool part of NE. Custer county must be the national magnet for hail and bad storms!

Very nice.......... What did you use for the floor? How much (distance) bracing under it?
I have a trailer that I'm getting ready to redo and am considering sheetmetal for the floor since there is a handler close that I could just get the frame ready (painted) and tow it over and have the metal dropped in place then go back home and fasten/paint it...... Wondering how thick I need to go.

Dave

Well......it depends what you want to haul of course. I have 2"x4" square tube cross braces at about 2' centers as that is what I had and it is also strong even though it is only about 1/8" thickness. The top bar is 2"x2"x1/8" angle iron. The floor is only 18 gauge as I wanted to keep this trailer lightweight. If you want to keep the floor very straight when you weld on it or if you plan to drop things on it then you better use 1/8" (about 10 gauge)thick sheets, or thicker, and maybe drop to 16" or 12" centers under it.

I wanted to keep this thing at about 500 lbs. total....need to see where I ended up! (It should be close.)

Ha ha, yes! Those are just to keep the rain from setting in there.....fully welded along the bottom of the hitch underneath! But you never know, we've seen it all on here......

Federal DOT specifications for commercial vehicles prohibit welding on the safety chains. The reason, as was posted earlier, is that there is no way to know the strength of the weld. With bolted fasteners you can see the markings for the strength rating.

I stand corrected. Much as I like the Custer County area, I don't think there's a vehicle over a year old in Custer County without a hail ding or two, or more. Buffalo County, too.

Which brings up an old joke. What three counties in Nebraska are named after animals? Antelope, Buffalo, and Garfield.

nice ALLIS CHALMERS ORANGE trailer ya go there, or is it OSHA SAFETY ORANGE? gona be fun driving that quad on when the tires are full of mud and it's raining slick on the trailer floor,

The paint can said Case Power Red, or something like that. Pretty much orange! It may be hard to get up the ramp but I will find out and can always add two strips of something for traction. With 4 wheel drive there isn't much I can't climb and with a drop axle on the trailer the ramp isn't very steep. We had .5 to 3.5" rain last night so I guess I can go muddin' and then find out......
