U.S. 71 is the official detour for I-29, but a lot of folks are using U.S. 59. Both of those roads are carrying WAY more traffic than was ever intended and several traffic accidents have occured because of the increased traffic, plus most of the drivers using those detours THINK they are still on a 4 lane, divided highway with a speed limit of 70+ m.p.h. If I was you, I'd stay right on I-70 until you are in Kansas and then go North. I THINK highway 81? will take you all the way into South Dakota, and the last time I was on that highway, it was a very good road.

Beings I live right at ground zero of the flooding (Rock Port, MO), I think I can speak for everyone in the county by asking you to please continue west on I-70 into Kansas and then turn north on Hwy 81 as Rustyfarmall suggests. Our highways can't handle anymore traffic... But, when the flooding is over and everything's fixed in a couple a years, please come visit. :) Josh

I"d concur that going to Salina and take 81 North to York to I-80 is a simpler way to go.

As I understand Rulo, Brownsville, Nebraska City are all closed. Plattsmouth (US 34) is open.

I-680 on the North side of Omaha is closed; which includes the I-29 leg north of Council Bluffs to almost Missouri Valley.

I"d avoid the mess if possible.
Have a great trip.

Missouri Valley, Iowa to Blair (US 30 i think) is open.

I 70 to Salina is good. US 81 north from Salina is 4 lane, 70mph, most if not all the way to Nebraska line.

If if"s chow time when you get to Salina, take I 135 (on west side of town) south a few miles to

Crawford St. exit Russells on east side of road is supposed to be a good place

Another couple miles south, Magnolia St. exit, east to first main intersection (9th St) At NE corner of intersection is "Coyote Canyon"...my favorite buffet in the state. One price for everything you can eat.

get on 81 north to york, then go west to grand island, state fair going on till labor day, get on 281 going north to highway 20 and go west through the sand hills, and go out by way of harrison

Thanks to all for the help.I think I'm gonna go up thru Illinois and east central Iowa to Albert Lee Minn and I 90 west. I have fond memories of that route. That was one of the ways my dad used to drive to get to Alexandria Minn.I'll still have to come home thru Nebraska as I got some business in Lincoln. That's why I asked about 77 south to 36.Still got 2 weeks to decide.
Got other things to do this week like drive up to FARM PROGRESS tomorrow. Thanks again.
