I am looking at a Bobcat skidsteer that has been parked outside and has not ran in 10 years. It has an enclosed cab and 50% rubber. It is being sold as is and you can't try to start it. Hour meter broken. paint is faded, some rust.

What do you think the odds are that I can put in a battery and start it up? Should I walk or run away?
Don't need no Halloween nightmare but it's tempting for $200.00

For $200.
I rebuilt a set of hydraulic motors on an old Ericson bobcat many years ago. I had to machine the rings/shaft/new bearings/linkage pieces. It was for an old boss of mine. I would say buy it.

You can be pretty sure it probably won"t start right off. For that price, you can afford to invest some on repairs and still have a viable machine - MAYBE! We salvaged a "49 Farmall C that had set for numerous years in father-in-law"s barn. Was still free, and not froze up. Were able to get it going for a minimum of repairs, - mostly ignition. Setting outside may be a whole different ballgame. Can you salvage it for parts?

i would take it. ive never owned a bobcat skidsteer. i would try and get it running and pound around with it if i could get it run. i guess anything is possible right. you can always ask questions after you buy it on where to start with it. ask them what the reason was for parking it.

What Model Bobcat? Gas or Diesel? Hydrostatics or an old vari drive?

Some of the Hydrostats need special preparations to flat tow them unless you want to just slide the tires and winch it on a trailer.

Unless it is one of the old ones with air cooled engine scrap is surely worth twice what they are asking.

I think I would pay the man and load it up. If it ends up being total junk you could scrap it and get your money back.

If you can haul it yourself... you can't lose at that price. If you've got to pay for hauling... more debatable.
Knowing what model it is and how old would be worthwhile information in deciding wether you just haul it to the junk man or try ro resurect it...
