I remember spending a weekend at event a couple hours away from home back in school with students from all over Illinois and they thought I was pulling their leg when I told them what are sports teams were called. Anyone care to guess what the mascot is at Farmington? First person to guess it right can go 4 wheeler riding with me and wrigley if we can borrow a ride!!!

I believe they are the Farmington "Farmers" I started out my education in the Franklin Twp Indiana schools "Franklin Central Flashes" Then to the Somerset, KY "Briarjumpers" Then finally finished up as a Allen County "Patriots"

Clear Creek - Clippers.

School song - Anchors Away

Wikipedia knows everything. Only they don't show a picture of this "Farmer" which is probably a good thing. (;>))

Hutto H.S. Hippos (a Hippopotamus)
Florence H.S. Buffaloes

Corpus Christy Miller H.S. Buccaneers
Floydada H.S. Whirlwinds (A tornado)

My high school was the Tenino Beavers. The cheerleaders used to get a few comments on that.

Some of my favorites- Orofino, Idaho was the Maniacs- presumably because the state mental hospital was there. They became politically correct in the early '70's and changed it.

For the potato fanciers, Ridgfield is the Spudders, and Shelley, Idaho is the Russets. Camas, WA has a paper mill, so are the Papermakers. Rainier, WA is in the shadow of Mt. Rainier, so are the Mountaineers.

Back in the 20s or 30s Aitkin, MN was the Turkey capital of the world. With 2 hatcherys, a processing plant and Lots of turkey farms in the area. All the plants and farms are gone now but the HS team still carries the name it was given back then. Not only the cheerleaders but the teams themselves caught a few comments over the name.

My high school alma mater still is the Agawam Brownies. It is a reference to the Mawaga tribe that lived there.

One of my fav's is the Richland, WA Columbia High Schools Bomber's. Named for a B-17 the local's donated to the war effort to buy and the fact they helped build the atomic bomb. Mascot is complete with a mushroom cloud!

Lewisville Texas (north of Dallas) used to be (and probably still are) The Fighting Farmers. I always wondered if the Hatfield and McCoys once lived in that area!

My personal favorite is the former name of the Pekin teams. Probably not politically correct to mention it on here, and that's probably why it got changed some years ago. I think they are the "Dragons" now, but wouldn't bet money on that.

Here in Arthur, IL - we are the Knights. Hence King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Colors are Red and White. The girls are Lancers and the Jr. Hi. are the Pages...all with the same type of theme.

Neighboring schools -
Sullivan - Redskins - Yep they still use and the india head as a mascot.
Mattoon - Green Wave - to reflect the wind blowing over the corn.
Arcola - Purple Riders
Atwood - Hammond - Rajahs - the only one in the country.
Tuscola - Warriors and yes they still use an indian theme.

For about the first hundred years they were the Frisco Texas 'fighting coons', but along came politically correct & they 'down sized' to 'fighting raccoons'....the furry critter.
Then and now are the Van Texas team, the "Van vandals".....

Here are a few local high school team names:
Bettendorf Bulldogs
North Scott Lancers
West High Falcons
Muscatine Muskies
Clinton River Kings
Assumption Knights

Guys, OK,OK, I! Forgot! LOL! Thanks Y'all.
There are many, many Unusual Mascots that is for sure.

Mitchell, SD, home to the World's Only Corn Palace, and the Mitchell High School "Kernels".
There used to be a JV team called the "Cobbs".

My kids will be PRETZELS. This name was supposedly decided as there was a bunch of breweries in Freeport at the time. Think their mascot is a contortionist. lol

We were the Seaman Vikings. The newspaper headlines were always a little dicey when we played the Topeka High Trojans. (I won't spell it out for those who are pure in thought!).

One that made me scratch my head was the Big Springs, TX "Steers". I could understand maybe "Bulls", but "Steers"? They do know how steers are made right? I heard they had trouble finding guys who could sing bass in the choir! What were the women's teams? The "Heifers"?

Would you believe that the Farmington, WV High Scool (now closed, consolidated) was also known as the Farmers? That's about 4 miles from here. Now it's the North Marion Huskies. The Fairview Indians, Barrackville Bison, Monongah Lions, Farmington Farmers, and the Mannington Gators(?) all combined to form North Marion.

Lancaster Flying Arrows. Some noise about changing it to keep the peace with the Native Americans... BECAUSE Europeans never used arrows, right?

Southampton Indians, because of the Nottoway Indian tribe that resided in Southampton Co. I graduated in 1975 and we went to the state football group AA (500-1000 student schools) final 8 times in the 70's and won 4 of them!
