Wanted to get the basket broken down before I head out in the country to feed my critters.

Ya just gotta love GM and their "lip type" seals. Don't wanna speak out of turn, but they really should have taken a lesson from Ford in this area. :>)

Least noticable clutch in the old hooter, but the over-run was cooked and look what caused it. :>)

Forward clutches got a little warm from the starvation and those "bad 3-4 clutches" look as good as they day they were installed.

Onwards and upwards.......

At least you found the problem and that alone makes the whole task worthwhile. How do the thrust washers and planetary gears look? Put a magnet or two in the bottom of the pan to collect those real fine ferrous bits.

Allen, what kind of mess have you gotten yourself into? Looks like a puzzle no one could solve.I know nothing about transmissions, but I do have a couple GM cores laying around if you need some parts. One from the 70's and another from the 90's.

Have you got a "90's" transfer case? That's where I'm headed next.

Be nice if I didn't have to overhaul this one. :>)

Okay, power flow-Check! Where and how in the world do you keep all those disks/plates/baskets so you know where they belong when it's put back together?? I can bet I would have half of them on upside down, sideways, or backwards before I could blink twice and then have two or three left over when I finished. My hat is off to you, Allan, your experience shows!!

Is this a ground up restoration? I thought you bought this gem as a farm beater? Pretty soon you're gonna have a "like new unit".

Oh heck,

They'll only go together one way.

Think the only thing a guy could really mess up is maybe the stack order of the plates or perhaps the direction of the thrust bearings.

But ya learn that over time just like anything else in this world.

Yep,

It started out as just an old beater to go out and check my pastures instead of using the new diesel out in that rough country. :>(

One thing led to another (ya know I can't stand anything mechanical that doesn't work right) and I'm having so much fun watching this old gal come back from the brink!

Gotta put bearings in the transfer case yet and get rid of that annoying gear whine in the rear end.

At that point, I'll be able to pretty much drive it to Rome and back without any issues. :>)
