1/16 machine shed

OT I am going to build my son a 1/16 machine shed for his collection of tractors and machinery. Just wondering if anyone has some good pics or some plans they have seen or done to build a very nice looking and detailed shed.??

I think your missing a lot of the fun by not planning it together with your son. Do it like a farmer would- take a look at what you want to 'store', how big it is, what size doors you need, 'shop space', etc. Then look at efficient use of materials.

I think you'll find that an actual 'scale' shed will be too big for practical purposes, so some compromises will have to be made- another teaching moment.

You don't mention how old your son is. If he's younger, then he can't be as involved in the woodworking, and a smaller shed would be best but, on the plus side, he can 'grow' into it and there could be another opportunity to 'expand' later. If he's older, then it's never too early to learn some carpentry skills.

Don't get too wrapped up in realism- your son's imagination will fill in a lot of gaps. I remember when I was a kid and a friend's dad built him a box out of particleboard with holes in one side and one end- boy I thought that was the greatest! Keep it simple and have fun!

I posted these pictures a little while back, not a machine shed but some ideas. You have to decide if you want your shed to be able to disassemble for easier storage. This wood corncrib has hooks in the corners so it knocks down. Since your son will be playing with the shed it has to be strong. I made a barn with a hinged roof out of an old feed box and it would be plenty strong to to be played with. Will see if I can find a picture of it.

I'm a day late, but..

I've never built any 1/16th stuff, but I've built many 1/64th buildings in my teenage years..

Only advise I will offer is this:

I made a scale building the same as the shop my dad built for my grandfather.. We built the barn early in 97, I built the building about a year later, to scale, from the prints (to the best of my ability with the crude tools I have/had to work with)..

In the end, my 1/64th 9500/9600 combine wouldn't fit under the doorway when grandpa's real deal would fit in the real building, with a hopper extension to boot.. It ended up so the doorway of my model is cut above the top of the sidewalls..

I have kinda given up on it now for quite a few years, but, for a long time I was working to build all of the buildings and collecting all of the toys that were on the farm throughout my growing up, and planned to build 3 or 4 layouts to show the changes over the years.. I've got most of the tractors and combines now, and have built a couple of the sheds.. Someday I'll get back around to it..

So my advise, if building a scale of a actual building, is to make sure all things you plan to "store" will fit before construction begins.. Oh, and I still remember my first building.. My grandpa built it.. I recall it was quite large, and I loved it until it just finally fell apart from moving it around from one playplace to another.. It was mostly assembled from 1/4" plywood and 1x firring strips, and a couple piano hinges for the opening roof.
