Got a problem with my air compressor.

Its a Speedaire 5hp, 80gal, 3phase horizontal.

Anyhow, it is something that is in the pressure switch.

Here is the entire assy.

When the pressure exceeds 100psi, this problem begins.

This is the problem part, the little part that is connected to the hard line.

This little "device" is some type of valve. There is a little needle that extends from the tip of the "nipple" It connects to the hard line above it.

Anyhow, there is a small paddle assembly inside the switch that moves against the little needle. As the needle is pushed in, it will bleed air. (why?)
Under normal operation, the needle will extend all the way out, close the valve, and will not leak air.




I cant make it stop leaking. There is a constiant hissssss coming from that little device. Not a major loss of volume, but enough to deplete the entire tank in just a few hours.

My question is this. Is that little valve bad, or is there something in the pressure switch that can be adjusted to get to to close fully?

Everything else is fine.
 
ok i m not an expert by any means, but that thing your looking at is the unloader valve, it lets the compressor start without a load on it, I think the valve is bad IMHO, but like I said i m not an expert, i m sure someone else will chime in
 
Can't really tell from the pics, but it looks like it's the unloader valve. It bleeds off air in the pipe from the compressor to the tank when the compressor shuts down so the compressor doesn't start under load when it re-starts. There should be a check valve at the tank to prevent air flowing out towards the compressor and that's what is probably leaking.
 
The hard line going from the air tnak, is that your air outlet line to your compressed air outlets? The schrader valve is used for checking to tank and pressure switch. It allows you to blow compressed air into the system from an outside source. They do wear, and it sounds like it needs to be replaced. If you have a tire air valve tool, it should work fine to remove the old one as well as install the new one. You could mess with it trying to fix it, which might work for the day, but won't be permanent.

I was wrong about where the line goes. It is to the unloader, yet, the schrader is not a relief, and does sound like it has stuff in it. I do not think that considering the cost of extra schraders is worth messing with. If you need it until tomorrow, you can likely get it to seat, yet, it is likely not worth saving for long term.
 
The part you are having trouble with is a check valve assembly, #17 on my 1hp model. Try to take it apart and clean it and lubricate it. If that doesn't fix it the only thing you can do is replace it. Granger sells parts for Speedair. It is a one way valve that when working properly will not let any air out of the tank. Its kind of like a valve stem on a tire.

That hard line runs directly into the main line that comes off of the cylinder,and runs into the tank,right above the valve in question.

I got the unit at an auction,it didn't come with a book.

Got it fixed. It was that valve. The unit has very few hours,but must have sat for a few years. The valve was rusted up. I took it appart and emery clothed it. Hosed it down with some liquid wren h,and put it back together. Worked like a charm. Thanks guys.
