Cheap way to replace broken cell phone

My wife broke her AT&T cell phone. We went to Wal-Mart and purchased a cheap ($15) AT&T cell phone - the kind where you can buy prepaid minutes . I took the SIM card out of the broken phone, put it in the new phone, charged the battery and she was back in business. Total cost: $16.12 including tax. That sure beat going to the AT&T phone store and ponying up a couple of hundred dollars for a new phone.

tg,

I've been doing exactly what you did for at least 7 or 8 years. I mess up my phone regularly with mud/water/damage. Each time I ruin a phone I buy the cheapest one I can get at Wal-Mart, swap the SIM and go on my merry way. Those phones are call "Go-Phones", but I must admit that have always paid $19.95 for my phones. You got an extra good deal.

Same thing on the batteries. Replacement batteries not availaboe, or you have to go someplace andp ay $30 or $40. I just buy the cheapest phone, pull the battery, and let the boys take the phone apart for a science project.

Before we switched phone/internet service for the house and got a flatrate that included one cell phone, I'd catch phone numbers (sim cards) on special for 5 euro with 10 euro free calls. Never gave out my phone number and only used them to call out. When empty, put them on ebay.... Can't hold onto a phone long enough for the battery to go bad

The phones that use a sim, you can make company unlock phone where any sim can be used..used an att phone on another company for years...they did not want to unlock but I had paid for phone and they did not own it.. told them to unlock...

What's this with the SIM cards? Around here in Mn we don't have SIM cards. We have the CDMA system and don't need the card. I thought that the card was mostly for traveling overseas in other countries. Can they be used here too? Anybody Know?

My Verizon phone doesn't have a SIM card.

After 4 months, my new verizon phone died. Went to a verizon store and they gave me another phone. It only lasted 2 months. They gave me another phone, had to use my old battery. Next phone lasted 1 month. It only lasted a few weeks. I asked verizon, what's going on? Come to find out they were giving me used phones. They were to be reconditioned, but they were still used phones. I was very upset and asked for a new phone. That phone is still working 2+ years.

BTW, had my dish updated. They installed all used equipment and I have to pay an insurance fee, around $7 a month, or be charged when their used equipment breaks.

Don't like class action law suits, but it wouldn't surprise me if verizon and dish won't have a problem.
