Take to the scrap yard?

I have two items here in southwest Montana I don't need but don't want to scrap if there is a need for them. One is the rear bumper from a 1953 Cadillac which was turned into a two wheel trailer. Maybe there would be call for the rear axle or suspension, also. The other thing is a Chevrolet 292 six cylinder engine originally from a 1968 3/4 ton 4x4. I don't like to scrap that which somebody might be desperately looking for, so do I scrap them or save them? Thanks.

Guesstimate the scrap value, then list them on Craigslist for that value or a little more. If someone buys them, you would be happy and so would they.

I suspect that the engine would be worth selling as an engine, if it is complete and not cracked. The rest would be for a very specific market, though you could sell it for use.

Boy if you were closer I would like to get the 292 and the cross member out of that 4x4. I have a 68 1/2ton 4x4 that I am redoing that had a 292 3sp on the column in it and I want to make it as close to original as possible. That cross member the engine bolts to is the only thing keeping me from doing that. It was only used in 67-72 1/2 3/4 and 1ton 4x4 trucks with a 292 and finding one is not easy. They didn't make that many 4x4 in those years and having a 292 was even fewer yet. Seams every body changed them to V8s and through that cross member in the junk pile. I think the 250 that's in it will have to do till I can find the cross member, I have a 292 that needs a manifold but it needs the cross member to use it. Bandit

Scrap yards???? Be careful,if they have their own scales. Took one load to one that was about 10 away.On the way I passed a local grain buyer
certifierd scales. I lost 125# of heavy iron by the time I weighed at the junk dealer. The next five loads went to another junk buyer all weighed in within a few pounds. ggp

Maybe I should have said that for anybody needing them and not planning to scrap them they would be free. The engine is no longer in the truck it came from.

Paul -
Go to Stovebolt.com or jalopy journal.com and post the parts in the swap shop area. Many folks looking for a 292 and the Caddy parts can be used for old schol hot rods.

I am rebuilding a GMC 270 right now and will be overboring it to make a 292 :)

Banditfarmer: Maybe you could google the web for small load truckers looking to add a few items.. Might get lucky... The internet is good at connecting people who are far apart.. Almost free to TRY making a connection..

I am sure someone will be trying to contact you for these parts.

I could always use a GM six cylinder from before electronics. Where is it? Though if it is complete, you can get a pretty penny for that. Before saying, "Bob. come get it", you might want to post it on craiglist and get some some dinero for it. I don't know the cash value of it, but since it is not electronically controlled, it has close to universal application. You can power anything with it, well, anything that it has the power to operate. Believe me, that engine has cash value beyond scrap, if it is complete.

Where you at I may have some of the stuff your looking for since I have parts and pieces of 3 or 4 1969 Chev's here and I am also building a 292 that is going in a 1951 Chev

Paul, maybe I shouldn't have put it like that. I actually live near Jackson, TN. Don't misunderstand me, If you were anywhere close, I would be thrilled to pick up such a universally usable engine. I can't imagine anyone else not wanting it, either. If that engine appeared on your local Cgaigslist, I am sure you could get serious money for it.

I wish I'd known this back in October. I was in your area .I would have looked at the engine.
Did you check the bone yard on 191 in the Hot Springs area.(I think that's were it was?)They might give a couple bucks for what you got.Good Luck.

I don't need the stuff, but I admire a guy who is thoughtful enough to at least make an attempt to get someone else set up. There was a guy on these forums a month or so ago who was actually proud if the fact that he busted up the stuff so no one else could use it, even though he was paid a fair price for it. That's just spite in my book. I'm a Ford lover, but seeing a fine engine like a 292 I-6 scrapped is just...wrong!
