Amazing Original Photographs from the Civil War

Whether you like history or not... These are pretty amazing considering they were taken up to 145 years ago: A compendium of photos from the Civil War era. Truly fortunate that so many of these have survived. Probably a million wet plate photos were made during the civil war on glass plate. Popular during the war, they lost their appeal afterwards and so many were sold for the glass. Many used in green houses. Over the years the sun caused the images to disappear. Run the cursor over the photograph and the picture caption will pop up. Click photo to enlarge.

Anybody know of a site with photos from around Gettysburg. Live 7 miles from the square and absorb quite a bit of Civil War stuff by osmosis just being here, but I do have a bent for history as well. Most of these building seem to be from Charleston and Richmond. Be interesting to try to place local buildings.

Some of those pics are from Gettysburg. the one with the white fence I believe to be that section just after you leave the main battlefield on the right towards town. (Still standing)

I didn't know that both sides shared the same medical facilities. Learn something new every day...

One of the best and most informative books on the Battle of Gettysburg is titled:
A STRANGE AND BLIGHTED LAND: Gettysburg,The Aftermath of a Battle. by Gregory A. Coco

I had a relative who fought with the 8th La. Inf. there on Cemetary Ridge. He survived the battle and the war.

Went back and looked and found a few that are from Gettysburg. Lutheran Seminary is still there, would be interesting to try to find that view and overlay today"s picture. Also found one from Hanover Junction which is local as well. Lincoln"s train stopped there on his way to Gettysburg.

THANK YOU for sharing that link. A amazing time in our countries history. If you have never been to the Abraham Lincoln presidental library, it is worth the trip. It is very impressive and is very educational. I will be spending hours looking at those pics.
