Just like a new truck

I hauled a load of cattle to the stockyard this morning. Coming home,I just happened to look down at the odometer and it was all zeros. Rolled up 200,000 and on an 85 there aren't enough digits for the 2,so except for the unbalanced tires bouncing,it was just like having a new one.

Do you suppose you could buy a new truck (built under the auspices of our
glorious government), and have it hold up like that one has? Hmmmm...Good Luck!

As long as it was a Ford, yes. Course, they ain't Gubmint Motors. The wifes 02 Ford pickup has over 260,000 on it.

I have an '89 Chevy X cab, long box 4X4 I bought on an auction several years ago. The odometer showed 259,000 miles. When I drove it home, I found out the odometer was stuck on 259,000.

I've fixed the odometer, but I haven't a clue how many miles it might actually have on it. It's perfectly healthy and does everything I ask of it, so what the heck? I only paid $800 for it.

rrlund,

I have a 1997 Ford Ranger 4 cylinder, 5 speed manual - it has 284,000 miles on it.

I got nervous about it having so many miles on it, so a couple of weeks ago I bought a "new" 2005 Ranger with only 147,000 miles on it.

I still use my old truck for farm stuff and use my "new" truck to drive to my part-time job.

The wife bought that 02 new. She used it for her home health care job. Really haven't done much to it,brakes, tires,a set of tie rod ends and front wheel bearings. We drove it to Kentucky in 2010,but it was just to the point of making me a little nervous this last summer, law of averages,so I rented a car to drive down there. Still not the least bit afraid to drive it anywhere in the state though.

Neighbour sold his 2wd 1989 Chev with the 350 in it 2 years ago. Had well over 600,000 km (375,000 miles) on it. One valve job and a few fuel pumps was it. I still see the new owner driving it around and here its getting near 700,000 now (437,500 miles).

The '96 Dodge Cummins truck I used to have had 313,000 miles on it when it was sideswiped and totalled. This was about four years ago. I probably would still be driving it otherwise. It was still a dependable truck. Just fix the wear items on it and drive it. Mike

Your '85 is about 5,000 miles ahead of my '01 F350 (6.8L V10/5-speed)... and more than 150,000 -behind- my brother's '95 Ranger. (2.3L 4-cyl./5-speed)

My neighbor has a 03 F350 4X4 7.3 Diesel. He usted to pull travel trailers, It has over a million miles, original motor, never been appart. It has had a new auto trans. Vic

I owned a 1979 Chevrolet SRW 1 ton that had 850 000 kilometres on it. Engine had been swapped from a 454 to 350 at some point, but everything else was original

Well shucks, compared to all those reports, my '76 F150 is almost new. I bought it from the original owner about 14 years ago, it had less than 60,000 miles, now it has 104,000. Other than routine maintenance, the only thing I have done is replaced front brake pads once and a new fuel filter.

"07 Silverado with Duramax, 204,000. New front wheel bearings around 180k and a battery, still stock brake pads. I was going to do a brake job with the bearings, but barely a lip on the rotors and plenty of pad lining. Some of the seals (transmission and transfer case are starting to weep, though) Hoping for 400k out of her.

Be sure to tell your accountant. He can depreciate new value and save you some tax dollars.

In short, don't mouth off about it if you don't know what you are talking about.

I have a new GM, bought in April that is a result of the govt intervening in GM's business and it is the finest truck I have ever owned, and it certainly has all the things I hated about GM fixed.

I got real burned out on GM back in the '70's when I saw a news article about the then CEO saying that they would build what they wanted and we would just have to buy it. And then the downsizing of the vehicles and the mess that came of that. And then their floppy frames on their trucks, quadrajet carbs, half fast cold engine start accessories, short lived starters, alternators, leaking PS pump seals, sorry brakes, 10,000 zerks to grease, rusting rear windows and quarter panels, 10,000 mile spark plug change, sorry gas mileage.................could always tell when a GM was in front of you.....you could smell them.....unburned fuel, to name a few.

Not only that, after having the truck for awhile and thinking about it, after the trial period ran out, I subscribed to the On-star emergency service that GM has in it's vehicles now and it gives me a tremendous peace of mind.

So, tell it to someone else sir!

Hey now, there's an idea! I should get out there and get a picture of it. I think it's showing about 5 miles right now.

Tex, when your new Jimmy truck has a couple of hundred thousand miles on it and 10-12 years have gone by, it's still safe, fast, dependable and hasn't cost a mint to keep up, I'll salute you and it.
I gotta say too, that l never realized all those improvements you mentioned were government mandated...I thought it was normal evolution of the species and public outcry...I just didn't know our goverment was virtually designing and engineering our trucks for us too. I thought they were managing the financial matters for some failing manufacturers and regulating how much smoke their products put out. We are so lucky that our government is so capable...and willing to do so much for us.

Tex, sorry to burst your bubble, GM WAS a great company before external_link motors took over, now I wouldn't buy a new one again, 44 years of being a loyal GM owner and stock holder. NEVER again. external_link fired MY companies President, I did not get a vote, which is my right as a shareholder. Wagoner did not want Bankruptcy as he knew how many others would be destroyed in the process, external_link didn't care as those people didn't vote for him. The great quality you speak of was ther BEFORE GM was destroyed, the garbage coming from external_link motors and the union rats will show it's lack of quality soon, as with the hot selling VOLT...

I have a 87 ford 150 with 267,000 miles on it.

At church on father's day the preacher asked all the fathers to stand and he asked for the vechile with the most miles on it. He started out around 50,000 and went up. people begin to set down but i was still standing. finally got embarrased and just told him how many was on my truck so i could sit down. but in long run beats paying those high payments. DJ

GM stunk and the crap they produced.....spoken by a disgruntled ex GM owner (ME) who left the brand back in about 1975 and never returned till 2011.

What I said about the POS CEO about we Americans would have to drive what they (GM) felt like producing...remember he had a long face, lived somewhere in the Detroit suburbs, was quoted at making just under $500k that year when most working folks were doing good to make $10k.

Pffffffffffft!
