This is getting expensive

Ordered and paid for the inputs for the corn on corn acres I am planting this year. Seed cost $158.00/acre. fertilizer $116/acre. I won't tell you what I pay for rent but will tell you average rent here in So.central Mn. is from $250-$350/acre. But in a normal weather year we can get 175 bpa. So at $6.00/bushel market there is still some decent $$ to be made. Just handling more money. My equip is not new by any stretch of the imagination but it is all paid for so I guess I will just keep plugging along.

Paying double the fert bill you are, tho to be fair it is suposed to be a 2 year application - enough P & K for next year's beans.

Not paying thst for seed tho, think almost 1/2 of your bill. Not sure what seed will be, pick it up in March or April.

Fuel is looking to really go up isn't it, mid=east had some people nervous.

This is a smart stack Dekelb. $289/bag. I had it in my plot last year. The increase in yield above average more then pays for the high price seed by a long shot. But don't now if this years weather it will act the same. Can't worry about the unknown though.

Fertiliser is our most expensive input—mostly urea, with a 'starter' NPK + Z. We mainly grow wheat and barley but current prices are very low, less than $180 per tonne at the farm gate

It is almost not worth growing, we are barely covering variable costs.

Yup I"m in the same boat here. $95 an acre for P and K. Over $125 for Nitrogen. Goal of 175 bushel an acre.

You are right on that seed idea. You can buy seed for $180 up to $300 a bag. Corn only has to yield about 8 bushels an acre more to pay for the good seed.

I"ll take the better yielding seed with those odds.

what population are planting your corn?

$289/2.5 =$116

80000/2.5=32000 pop

I am not sure, but I think your math is a little off.

Wow your average rent there compared to Ky is amazing. Curious as to what average ground sells for there.

What the heck brand of corn are you planting? I ordered Fielders Choice again this year. All roundup ready, some tripple stacked. With discounts averaged less than $160 a unit.

You"re right, plant the good stuff and it will pay. In the years when mother nature is against you seems to be when the good seed really shows itself. Our year in "11 was wet and then really dry. My best Agrigold whooped on some of my favorite dekalb from many years. Some just handle drought and other harsh conditions better. How about figure in an app of fungicide flown on, that"ll get that $/ac even higher!! I"ve tried it, hasn"t given me concrete results yet.

My trouble is, Anderson's single trait keeps out yielding the triple stack from Monsanto I plant samples of, even corn on corn....

Anderson's can be a tad wetter at harvest tho, so sometimes the drying cost negates the better yield.

Still the seed is cheaper, and yields better for my soils.

I heard that the tax incentives on producing ethanol were allowed to expire- how much effect is that going to have on corn prices?

Probably none. The federal mandate for use is still there. Currently,we're exporting ethanol to Brazil.

Nope, you are dead on. Cutting back to 32,000 this year because I am anticipating a dry season. Usually plant 34,000.

The Federal subsidy being talked about, or maybe already did expire, is a blender"s credit. It"s paid not to producers, but to those that market the fuel, as an incentive to mix and market. Some states may have a producer subsidy, usually limited to smaller plants or on a sliding scale to help them get started, but nowhere near the 50 cent/gal Federal credit.

They expired last week.

Corn is about 10 to 15 cents higher for this week.

So I'd say it hasn't hurt a thing just as I thought.

That is expensive seed. I've been using NK N68. I paid around $220 a bag, and will get 2.5 acres out of it. If the weather is good, I expect around 200 b/ac. You are right about the price of farming going up. I just farm a little on the side, but the amount of money I spend on seed and fertilizer is staggering. I love the farm, but sometimes wonder if there would be something better to invest my money in. Machinery is getting crazy too.

I was like Josh ..Our Seed cost wil be a littl sess but we will be closer to $ 200.00 acre on fertlizer. Don,t do much cash rent own most of the land but good bottom land very productive is renting for around a $ 100.00 an acre or less.
You did not mention chemical cost.
