New location...

With the diverse group of people we have on this forum and their vast experience I humbly ask for your help and opinions. I am looking for a new place to live!
Our current rural town is all but dead and our family of four is in a consensus to move. I have lived here all of my life and have not traveled too far from home, ever. I now need to think of my kids, as they deserve better. The things I think I need to look for:

Good Schools--high school for now and college in their future.
Healthcare—Quality healthcare as I am getting older.
Reasonable housing and property tax rates. I like the country and a few acres. A 30 minute trip to town is OK.
Low crime and drug rates. No racial tension.
Traffic—good roads, little to no congestion.
Religion—Baptist, don’t want to move into nnalert jihad territory.
Climate--I like it warm, not hot, but would not mind a little snow ever now and then. I do not want to live in tornado, hurricane or earthquake prone areas.
Terrain—I do like the mountains and hills—just no flat land as far as the eye can see. I love the outdoors and like to hunt and dislike fishing.
Employment-- The wife and I both teach, but I have a couple of business plans that require a busy walking climate (tourist trap with the ability to sell liquor) that is aimed at souvenirs and other products for tourists to purchase.

Looking for Tennessee, Eastern, North Carolina or Northern, South Carolina locations, and of course I will take the tractor with me.

I live about half way between Charlotte and Concord, NC. That said pretty much anywhere in NC will satisfy the majority of your requirements but somewhere like Ashville,or Hickory, in the Western part of the state would be ideal.

Treynor Iowa. They appear to have a good school, taxes seem reasonable, you are within 30 minutes of Omaha Nebraska. I have thought of moving over there, but am getting older, and it seems I may have lost my chance!

Wayne, I was thinking the same thing. My son lives in Asheville, and that area sounds like what the gentleman is looking for.

Old ky man, NCWayne has a good point. The western NC area around Ashevile, has a lot of tourist sites, good schools, everything from community collages to schools that are part of the UNC network. Google Asheville and some of the other towns in that area and check them out.

Old, In Indiana, your first teaching job may be your last, unless you are a special ed teacher or a specialist in certain areas.

I've known many teachers with 15 or more years move and never get back in the classroom, because they cost too much. Why hire a 15 year teacher when you can hire a teacher with no experience and save money?

Find jobs before you even think of moving.
George

I live in west central Indiana
I'm 45 minutes to Indy and 20 minutes to Walmart I have 10 acres and farm a few other fields (small) i rent. health care is great I even like the VA hospital. i have 4 kids and both the wife and I went to school here the schools are great better the further away from Indy you get. Tax's are ridiculous in Marion county (Indianapolis) and all the counties surrounding but once you get out side of that there not bad. Crime and drugs is like any were else just depends on where you are. And as for traffic, as long as you stay out of Indy or the suburbs of its not bad at all. In our town we have 1 stop light and the next town as one blinking red light and i don't think we need either. All in all i think its a good place. this year when my oldest started kindergarten they had so many kids register they had to hire another teacher and aid to add another class at the last minute. they just built the new primary school k-2nd grade and they are redoing the elementary school 3-6th grade and are adding several more teachers over the next few years. and it seems they just keep adding on to the high school every year so i imagine they have to keep adding teachers to. but besides race tourism i don't think there is much tourists that come to Indiana. but that's the story on my nick of the woods.

Are you prepared to move to Australia or New Zealand. We can satisfy all those wishes.
Drive the tractor over.Call in for a cuppa.

You are so right. In my school yesterday-a young lady appears to perform her student teaching and I jokingly said she was their to take my job at half the pay, twice the work load and three times the enthusianiam

So you are teaching at the local school and the county/state is considering closing it?
If not then what's the problem? You've decided to move to the big city?
Now your question is valid. What state do you want to live in? Climate--NOAA or Intellicast web sites will give average temperature across the country. Pick the state. Do a search of the state for the ranking of the schools, grade school. College--kids will be better off away from home, they will mature better.
You want to retire or quit? Then you need to really think about living in a big city with the higher cost of living.

You just described the area we live in,transplanted Illinoisions, North West Maricopa County Arizona,The real estate crash has caused the "this is the time to buy" thing to be a big deal here.Real estate took a big dive a couple of years ago and property is still affordable here. good medical can be had in any area of the county. good commercial areas.Very good Schools , Grocery stores etc.Seems to be plenty of middle class employment ,if you don"t build houses that is. those fellows are not very busy.Solar Electric Generation seems to be a start up buisness needing technisions badly.Palo Verde Nuclear Plant is always looking for good employees. Wickenburg Az. is a good Tourist town to set up in. It gets hot here but you get useed to it, It's a dry heat. Az. is a no permit required open and Concealed Carry State so be prepared to meet a Pistol Packer on the sidewalk or in a store. It took me a while to aclimate to this gun thing when we first moved here.I never have owned nor still don"t have a hand gun.Company buisness required me to work at the IHC Truck Test Track near Maricopa Az.in 1961 and again in 1964 and I acquired a desert likeing back then and I still like the desert. We have lived here since 2000 and will never go back to Illinois to stay unless in an URN. Good Luck.

You are looking for somewhere west or south of Clarksville Tenn. may be 30 miles or so.
We are one county over 34 miles west and absolutely meets every one of you list. E-mail me direct for more information. Great place low taxes, great people.

I agree with NCWayne, The Asheville area meets most of your 'wants'. I would avoid the Asheville proper area tho due it's location. It lies in an area that the air quality leaves a lot to be desired, it kinda lies in a valley with mtns. surrounding it. With the coal fired power plants in Eastern Tenn. & our weather usually coming from the West, it adds to the problem + not too far from A-ville in Canton, is a large wood pulp mill, have you ever smelled one of those? I live in NW South Carolina and love it but this area is turning into a golf yuppies paradise with several 'golfing' communities within 5 miles from my place. The 'golfing' communities homes usually start in the $500,000+ price range and this is driving my property taxes up. That said, I don't think I would happy living anywhere else. It's nice owning enough acreage to not have a neighbor in sight.

What part of Kentucky are you in? Maybe I'll trade you a farm in Michigan. Same death of a community going on here. Two years ago when I asked the same thing,I was invited by a member on here to come to the Paris Tennessee area. That's over in West Tennessee in the land between the lakes area. We looked in to it and it looked to be just what we and you are looking for.
Only thing stopped us from going was family. Seems no matter how bad it gets around here, some hard headed Swedes are too stubborn to leave. I couldn't convince them that with that way of thinking,we should still be in Sweden.

I would suggest the north Mississippi area around Memphis TN especially Desoto County. It offers much of what you list although many things you want are mutually exclusive. It's hard to find a big city where there is no racial tension or traffic congestion. This is where I live and am quite happy with it as a whole.

However, from my experience with our general area, if I had to move, I would strongly consider the Nashville TN and Cape Girardeau MO areas also.

Bullitt, Spencer, Shelby, Hardin (Fort Knox) Meade counties in Ky. are good places to live. UPS and Zappo shoe warehouse and a bunch of others are always hiring if your kids need a job. The schools are a problem so you have to investigate them closely. Great hospitals. Some of these counties are pricey because the yuppies have made the prices go up.

I have a Bullitt county girl! She would disagree! After 3 and a half years in the flat lands I don't think you could drag her back to L.J. with draft horses. :)

She says jobs around here pay a little less but the cost is live'n more than makes up for it. Her house that we sold when we got married for $95,000 would bring about $40,000 here.

I have lived all over the country, Spent a lot of time in Fl, Pa, Oh, NC, Texas, and I found a home in Far Western NC, Murphy area where there are excellent school, mountains, farms and lakes within 20 miles . Friendliest people I ever met. Atlanta is 120 milers, Blue Ridge Ga., 15, Chattanooga about 80 (Finest medical care I have ever had, six operations, four joints and cancer)Knoxville(UTENN) 100 and so on. If I had to live in a city again I would choose Chattanooga hands down. The Tenn river is very beautiful. Tenn has no income tax but has an 8 or more sales tax. There are small towns within 50 miles of Chattanooga that are just gorgeous. Thats my contribution.

Well living near Jamestown KY we are seeing lots of job loss, pills, closing businesses, meth, poverty, welfare dependency… Not what I want for my kids. I am looking for an area similar to that of Gatlinburg Tn. Basically a walking tourist trap. I would not in any form or fashion want to line in that mess, but I don’t care to drive in to town/work.

I will check out your towns of Charlotte, Concord, Ashville, Hickory & Murphy NC as well as Clarksville & Chattanooga TN. I think it is time for a road trip. Please tell me more.

R You never contacted me. I was the one that made the offer to show you around. As for this guy can,t beat this part of the country. Wished you would have hollred I would have got you down here. we are only 10 minutes from the entrance to LAND BETWEEN THE LAKES.. farm part of the ground there. jm.

Old you can e-mail me direct. When you come to Clarksville Tn I would be glad to show you around.. You actually want to be somewhere south or west of clarksville 30 to 60 miles. Two crowded right around there. New Hemlock semiconducter plant being built and lots goin on. The rural area 50 miles west is right on Lake Barkley and nice area.About the only drawback is land prices but there ARE still some bargains just have to get away from the realators.
