Calf prices

Just wondering what prices are in other areas, 300-400lb bull calves yesterday brought 202.75lb at Lynchburg,Va. Heifers same weight 156.lb, even heavy ones are bringing big money.

Wish you'd have posted this earlier- I might have been tempted to take a few out to Westminster--

Here in Oz we are getting that for a kilogram, close to half, always though we got screwed in the changeover from imperial,

If you are talking Westminster Md, 2 weeks ago I took a 650# angus bull calf and got .78/#. Ten month old calf should have banded him. I called the guy that hauled him and asked what happened to him, he said he was to fat and that hurt the price.

BCnT, has prices dropped because you guys are so short on hay in your area?? Up here in Alberta, Canada more hay around than in a long time. Prices are best in a long time also. Low for hay and high for calfs. Even heard of truckers loading up with big squares up here to haul down your way. Rocko.

If you would have banded him he would have been that much fatter, course he would have been a steer which brings more bucks there too. But you know that.

Beef Steers 300 to 400 lbs. 185-202
Beef Steers 400 to 500 lbs. 177-202
Beef Steers 500 to 600 lbs. 160-177

Beef Heifers 300 to 400 lbs. 170-186
Beef Heifers 400 to 500 lbs. 162-184
Beef Heifers 500 to 600 lbs. 147-165

I believe those prices are the max and min of the middle 80% of the sale.

our prices normally drop in winter and they did for awhile...everybody talking about how good prices are now...herds are so thinned out from drought that prices have no where to go but up.
thankfully we're getting some rain...my tanks are full again...if it keeps raining then we might have a chance at a good year...guessterologists are calling for possibly 9 more years of drought...this is my last one...if spring rains dont come,i'll be the last generation of 7 in Texas to have cattle.

I agree to that. If we don't have a good year my cows will be "history" also. Sad part is it can be very wet in May and very dry by the end of July if no rain comes in the Summer.

I think we've got enough feed to make it to spring comfortably. Gonna be interesting to see what prices do then!

In my area projections are for stronger markets into spring. Then dropping some during the summer and picking up again in the fall. Pretty typical scenario from year to year. We are almost mid-way through the 5 year up cycle on cattle prices. So, sell all while you can. Prices will start falling in the next couple of years unless the TX drought really diminishes the amount of cattle available. That seems to be the big unknown at the moment.

Just got the check today for the one I sent Wed. Week old, Holstein/Simmental cross heifer. $196.67 Was $215 before deductions for hauling, yardage, etc. Not complaining about that! Higher than the paper's quote on last week's Holstein heifer prices.
