Broke down and got Verizon Mifi for home today. Was on dialup and it just didn"t like the Windows 7 SLOOOOOOOOOOOOW - and cable not available. Works great on a foggy/rainy afternoon.

Wife and daughter are on Facebook and I can check up on YT at the same time!

NOW, just have to buy some more Verizon stock to have the dividends pay for the service.

Why does everyone seem to race to Facebook?

kruser,

A little over a year ago, I subscribed to Verizon Wireless for my wi-fi in the house and access to the internet via their cellular system. I started out with the 3 gig at $30.00 per month. I think we had one month with less than 3 gig of downloads, then it went to 4 gig, then it went to 5 gig. Over the holidays, we had a housefull of people and used more than 8 gig.

My wallet doesn't like the service but everything else about the service has been very good. Hope you have good results too.

Yeah Bill,

Kinda seems like we just made it to the 21st century - Now if Tom would just explain this gig stuff AND can you turn it off!

Sent from SWMBO's laptop on the couch.

kruser,

I going to assume you're not just "funnin" me so I'm actually going to talk about gigabytes. If I'm wrong about that, I apologize for being such a dweeb.

My plan with Verizon provides for a certain amount of data to be downloaded during a one month period of time (in my case from the 7th of the month to the 6th of the following month).

If I download a bunch of stuff (youtube, books for my wife's Kindle, play games on line, download user manuals for my farm equipment, download forms from the IRS, download updates to my Norton anti-virus application, download updates to any of the microsoft applications, etc. I can use up a lot of my monthly allocation of downloaded data.

Verizon keeps track of how much data I am downloading. Their basic plan costs $30.00 per month and allows me to download 3 billion bytes of data (3 gigabytes) per month. If I download more than 3 gigs during the month, I have to pay them extra.

If your plan is like mine, you can sign into your account at Verizon at any time and check how much data you have downloaded since your billing period (a month) began.

So, can you turn it off? Sure. Don't access the internet. Can you control how much you are downloading? Sure. Check your usage on your Verizon account periodically, and adjust your usage accordingly.

Again, if you were just kidding, I apologize for being a jerk. If you were serious, I hope this information might be a little bit helpful.

Thanks for the info Tom

Our plan has 5 Gig - Will have to check into monitoring it as SWMBO pays the bills and just "goes with the flow"!
