my new barn

Well thanks to you alls advice my barn is done. though i could not get my base done i had the crew just biuld it up 6in from the highest spot and i will back fill in the spring. the site does have a 4inch grade so ill have some filling to do. i plan on bringing in slag from the steal mill (25$ A triaxle load) and then top it with gravel.

Wish I had one like it and you had one twice as big. I had just got a new Shed and Shop 20 plus years ago and my neighbor Happy came over and bragged on it, as he was leaving he said. Nice shed son, but now your shed is outside! Never knew how to take that remark. Vic

I am glad you put effort into the slag solution. I have had almost all my relatives work in the mills at one point or another -- Porter County IN. We used slag for almost all lanes and roads as well as drainable fill. Jim

to me a building has to have overhang on the roof.when i see them cheap as-ed built things i just get turned off. why should the water run down the walls all the time? to me no engineering there. thats the same deal with those old mobile homes, after a while the water is running inbetween the walls and rotting them. i have experienced this a lot already. plus they are built so you cant even install eave troughs. now adays the new ones do have over hang and are built a lot better. myself i would never build such a roof like that.

this pic was done before all the trim was put on and the rain gutters witch are plumed into a rain water to water our 4 acre vegtable fields and 2 16x40 foot hoop houses. collection system.

i see several typos in my post we have an extensive water catchment system off our house my shop and this new barn to collect rain water and use gravity to irrigate our market garden and hoop houses.

Rustred,
Not everyone wants overhangs, wants to pay for them, or wants the wasp/bird nesting areas! A properly trimmed out and sealed shed will not leak, even without overhangs. Gutters are nice to have.

I just had a 60x96 put up and it has no overhangs. I don't recall the price being "cheap" and I sure didn't build it to be more fancy than the other sheds in the neighborhood!

Somebody always seems to find fault with something you may be real proud of. I have built about six of those over the years and learn something everytime that I liked or didn't like afterward. Then I just make the changes and live and learn. I may have done a few things different but your shed looks nice. I know I'm always excited too after I get one done.

Overhangs on a metal building don't bother me and I see no real benefit. ...but I agree, anyone that has dealt with a particle wood sided trailer house with a roof with no overhangs has at least cussed under their breath a time of two.

I like your barn man! I'm so ready for my own and enjoying watching and learning from the likes of yourself. Thanks for posting!

She's a beaute. Congratulations. That is pretty sharp. Since you still haven't dealt with the floor yet, if you plan to put in a hoist or anything like that, now is the time while its enclosed from the wind and weather, and only have clean dirt to deal with. In any event, she's a real looker. Use her in great health.

Well, ..... it's a metal sided building, that's for sure. I wouldn't call it a "beute". Pretty plain Jane, if you ask me. But it'll probably be dry and functional and look the same as a "pretty" barn from the inside.

The design for my planned barn includes overhangs because they keep the elements away from the top of the wall and I like the way they look. Just a personal preference.

Anyway, have fun filling it up and working out of the cold and rain.
