I have a john deere 2240 that has a rattling noise that stops whenever I lift the loader, rockshaft or turn the steering wheel.I suspect a hydraulic pump.It seems to be coming from the front pump at times and other times it seems to coming from near the steering area.
Any ideas?

Thanks

don't know if they are related, but a buddy has a german made 1140... He was driving it and the power steering quit and oil started coming out the steering column... Said it had been chattering off and on and he figured it was OK as long as it got quiet... Said it chattered real loud right before it quit
Anyway, he had to have a hyd pump replaced to the tune of about 1600 bucks.Don't know if it was the hyd pump PS pump, or if they are one in the same.....

Good luck....

Jim,

I checked the pump drive coupler and it is loose.I checked another tractor and it cannot be moved at all. What do you think?

If the hyd pump drive coupler is loose it needs attention to make pump operation even close to quite. These bushings(R45822 BUSHING ADD 2.21 USD)(requires 4) are the first to wear out then it get more expensive.

As other have stated check the pump coupler first. If it is tight then the check valves on the back of the pump pistons are bad. You should get it checked out soon. If the check valves are bad then the rattling noise is the hydraulic pressure jumping up and down. It will cause the PTO lines to break and they require the tractor to be split to fix.

(quoted from post at 19:27:30 01/28/12) It will cause the PTO lines to break and they require the tractor to be split to fix.

Not all 2240's had ind pto with supply tubes in trans to crack/leak. Dual stage models had none of these pto lines

I checked the pump drive coupler and 3 of the 4 rubber bushings were just about gone. They fell apart as soon as I opened the closure.Started the engine and things were very quiet so problem most likely the bushings or the pump I would guess.
Any input here would be appreciated
