School Food

Today had a good meal served at our school, beans,cornbread(if you can call it that mostly wheat flour), and of course collard greens. Now i know its not that big of a thing to eat for most in indiana but i beleive i was one of the only ones that know what it was.
Maybe i have a more southern way of eating then most, but i guess i always thought most people had heard of them atleast.
 
What do you do differently to chewing and swallowing, maybe you are referring to the recognition of the food which is being consumed.

mean more of the food not the eating. i may wipe up gravy with a slice of bread different then everyone else but my grandpas always done it so i do too.
 
That's enough to gag a maggot. If I were in that school, I'd be carrying my lunch (just like I did for 13 years when I was actually in school).

There ought to be laws against serving that kind of food.

We had whiners about the school lunch 45-50 years ago when I was in school, but I always thought it was pretty darned good food. At least there was variety. At home we ate what we grew at home so it was the same boring, but healthy, stuff every day.

In your defense, the school lunches today are cheapened up due to budget restraints we didn't have back in the 50's and sixties. When Marilyn was in the child care business she was surprised to find out ketchup was considered a serving of vegetables in the state guidelines. How much ketchup do you you put on your fries to classify it as a full serving of starch and vegies? Jim

a i always seem to get in a few agruments with the lunch ladies about counting the cheap potatos out of the box a vegtable. I can usally come away with an extra fruit most lf the time.
 
Fixerupper, I gradusted H.S. in '59 and I would have to say the meals at my school here in upstate NY were pretty good.
Come to think of it, just about everything was made right there in the school's kitchen.
My family didn't have much money, so for the last 3 years of H.S. I carried lunches and milk crates to the kindergarten classrooms for my free lunch. Kindergartners didn't go to the cafeteria.
I usually got an extra milk and fruit or dessert.
I had no complaints but I've never been a picky eater either.
We had an old lady who made the absolutely best "black" chocolate cupcakes I have ever tasted. I have never had better chocolate cake to this day! They came up on the menu every few weeks and you can bet I got at least one extra dessert on that day!
 
Our school dinners were referred to as .. The piece of cod that
passeth all understanding!

I came through grade school in the early eighties, in rural N. Florida. Most of ours was homemade and good. On Fridays in the winter, it was the best chilli, and came with biggest sweet roll you ever saw! How about that square pizza, did yall get that?
 
We always had good food except for one meal I remember. Cold cuts and a green hardboiled egg. That was the worst one I remember. Now our kids get pretty bad food at our school. Get this, they BUY peanutbutter and jelly sandwiches. They are premaid. Almost everything is bought from a food supplier and heated up. Damn shame.
