SUPER C ENGINE KNOCK

i just bought a super c and after it gets warmed up the engine has a low end knock, i removed the oil pan and found that #3 rod has a slight movement, the tractor runs good and doesnt smoke so i believe the rings are good, i am only going to use this tractor to do a few jobs and then get rid of it,i am undecided on just changing the one set of rod bearings or doing the whole bottom end, rods and mains. i am a backyard mechanic but this looks like a pretty easy job to do,any advise is appreciated

depends on what you mean by slight movement, if you can move it its toast. not talking side ways either, as you will have side ways movement. do what you gotta do cause the sooner you get that knock outa there the better you are, if its not too late allready. crank will have damage and be egged and just a new brg. might not last anyhow. and once you have it apart check the other rods also with plastigage. after your repair job run straight 40 oil or 20-50 oil in it. check your oil pressure with a master guage also , before and after. and when you go to sell it tell the customer the btm. end story, so when he hooks on the plow and the rod flys threw the block he knows why.

When you remove the bearing take it to a shop that wells them and they can tell you if its standard or over sized meaning the crank has been ground. The crank if its been ground should be stamped 010 ,020,030 10 means its been ground .010 under standard thats why you need over size bearings .010 to fit. If you want some good used ones for just the one cyclinder give me a call as i do have good used ones. 319-430-3907

Horizontal movement(side to side) is normal within range. It's called side clearance. Vertical movement is not indicating bearing play. It's not just the bearing play which is at issue, the crankshaft is worn also probably neccesitating crankshaft removal for the correct repair. If the bearing has spun in the housing you will also need a new housing (rod) or have yours reconditioned at a machine shop. ALWAYS mark the location and direction of rod or main caps prior to removal. They are align bored and honed. Hope this helps. Gerard

The tractor would be worth more if you rebuild the engine. I would remove the rod cap and inspect that rod journal and insert bearing for wear. The insert should have std or a decimal
number like .002", .010" on the back side. Measure that rod journal for wear and to see if it's eggshaped. If it's worn too much I would pull the engine and rebuild it. You can sell it as is and let the new owner rebuild it. Hal

Can't really make a suggestion besides remove and inspect all bearings. Then take required action. As someone else said noise in the bottom end will hurt resale value.

The more you spend on it, the less in your pocket. fix the bearings on that one b/e and then flog it before something else happens.

i pulled the bearing cap tonite and removed the bearings, i expected the crank to be visably worn and at least marked up. it was not the bearings doesnt even look bad, there are no markings on the bearing except clevite on oneq side and the numbers 674 cb386p on the other, i guess maybe they are standaed size,my buddies coming over with his mics tomorrow ,hopefully i can just do maybe a 02 over and put it back together, any advise on this would be appreciated
