I have a 84 4x4 chevy farm truck and was tending to the fluids . The trans. has a pipe plug in the left side about half way up . On the transfer case there are 2 plugs in the back , 1 at the bottom and 1 at the top , they take about a 1 inch wrench [cresent] . If filled to the top one it would be running about 95% full of oil , this dont seem right or is it ?? Cant see any other check plugs , Should it run that deep in oil or am I missing something ?

Post which trans case and I'll look up the info. Would you be interested in purchasing a Chey service manual for that model truck? One of the best trucks I've owned was an '83 4X4,6.2L. 240,000 miles on it and the engine block cracked.

If it's a 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton it has the New Process 208 transfer case. You fill the top plug with Dextron. Takes a wrench bigger then 1". It's an odd size - 1 1/16" or 1 3/16". I've got over a dozen of those trucks - all with 6.2 diesels. In the late 80s, the NP241 took the 208's place. Same fill though. The cast-iron 205 is only used in the 1 ton trucks in your year range and they take 90W GL-5 gear oil.

It has the 4 speed trans and aluminum transfer case [ think it is a 208 from what is said above ] 3/4 ton , 350 eng. I read in the owners manual it takes dextron and I know the top plug is where to put it but dont know if I should fill it all the way up to the top plug , seems that would be to much oil in it .

TGIN,

Yes, add ATF through the top hole, until the level is filled to the bottom of the threads. It may seem like a lot of fluid, but it only holds a few quarts. The case is fairly thin in the chain area, and the internal parts take up quite a bit of the inside space.

Hope this helps.
