OT mini aussie sheppard

My wife is wanting another dog after our last one died about four years ago and has found a 6mth old tri colored miniature austrialian sheppard that she wants to go take a look at. It is a male and has had all shots and neutered. I know there is lots of dog knowledge on this site so is there any reason we should stay away from this breed. We have and acreage and are retired so there is room and time. Opinions are most welcome

Australian Shepards sar great dogs. I believe in them solidly as the smartest most helpful canine. I also know that breeding smallness can and has changed the original breed into idiots. Be careful to check the temperment and woking dog fundamentals remaining in a specialty breed. Just because I have seen it. Best of luck, Jim

We had a full sized one. Smartest dog I've ever seen. Very loyal. We got him in 2003 and had our first child in 2007. He did not like our little boy or any little kids for that matter. We gave him away last year after he nipped our son for the third time. I miss him alot but we didn't have any other choice. Other than that, I preferred him to 98% of the people I know.

The minis are more prone to health problems and don"t live quite as long plus they have little man syndrome lol meaning not as pleasent temper. Where are you located?

I have a nini female about 3 years old. She is very dedicated to my wife, vaey active but also quite timid at times. Oh-ya and dumb as a stump.lol

Never had one, but have friends that do and they are all great animals.
A buddy had a litter of mixed pups a few years back, half Ausie and half Blue Heeler. He asked if I wanted the only female, I said sure I'll take her. She is a great dog, but then I've always thought cross breeds are the best. She pens the goats for me, all I have to do is ask. She really likes it, and works hard to get them all going one direction. She gets pretty worked up and wants to herd cats after that and after a few bloody noses I think she figured out it's easier to leave cats alone!

Our family is owned by a full sized Auzzie. She loves to herd the horses, cats and neighbors chickens, that's an instinct they have. She is probably the smartest dog we've ever had and great personality along with it. From what I've heard of the minnies, I'd be kinda leary of them. Ours is especially protective of my wife, but that's great too since I work away from home quite alot. just my thoughts, Keith

Thanks for all the input. I have been googling like mad as well. We are going to have a look on friday to see how it behaves. We live in BC. Leon

If someone is getting rid of an australian sheperd, especially after that investment, I'm sure there is a reason....
We have 6 of them (not minis)... Let her have a look, but don't let her go with a broken heart over the lost pet or if she's gonna sympathise and feel sorry for whatever sob story the folks have to cover up the fact that they bought a freak to begin with and prolly finished the ruining process.
Don't get me wrong, there are some responsible folks out there that put together some nice dogs, but they usually aren't the ones that folks invest in then dump at 6 months.

Good Luck.

Not necessarily, they may have a reason, see there is an adoption service in Texas [search engine] so it may be excess to requirements.

Here's our 2 K-9s.

The Lab knows more commands and responds to more words, but I think the Sheppard just lets him do most of the work. So maybe he's the smartest?

Mini is just another word for dumbed down and ruined breed.
They've ruined a lot of breeds trying to make them mini. Don't get caught up in that.

Obviously can"t speak for breeder and don"t know Aussies at all, but will echo some of the other comments that Mini is usually code for dumb, ill-bred, bad tempered, etc. There are some exceptions, but most of the desirable traits from the "breed" often disappear after the down sizing. Sometimes the "mini" has almost no genetic material of the breed other than enough to provide the proper "look".

Wish you well with it though,

Kirk

Have a 3 year minie aussie. Got her 1 year before I retired. She is very easy to train, loves to go for a ride in the truck or 4 wheeler. Housebroke, when outside with her she is either beside you or always has an eye on you. She will watch for hours any thing out of the norm happens she will be there to assist. Loves grandkids and is a excellent babysitter. You get out of a dog what you put into them, She is one of my best frends and the loyalist of all.

Do people REALLY nuter dogs at 6 months? I've
always thought to do it at a year, so that they
were "Fully Mature"

Since you have lots of room I would get a Chow.
They need to meet all your relatives and friends
while they're a pup. They won't become friends with a stranger. We have a Chow that's almost two years old. We had to put our 10 year old Chow to sleep from stomach cancer back in 2009.
You should see this Chow of ours run. She flies around our back yard going full speed ahead. Here's a few pics of her, we call her Sugarbear and she responds to just Sug. Hal

we have a mini and a regular size, night and day difference in attitude. both very active but the mini is very tempermental

Had a full size beautiful red merle(marle) . Got him as a rescue dog when he was about 8 months old. Smartest most loyal dog that ever owned us. He could herd, open doors, and talked almost human. Never ran away from the day he arrived. could never say enuff nice things about my Buddy. He also protected the cat and after saving the cat would chase him around just for the fun of it. I had to leave him with the ex-wife and I feel sorry for him. They moved to town. 12 years and still going.

Got a minnie aussie from someone who was going to just abandon her. She lived to be about 16. Far and away the very best dog we have ever had; smartest, best disposition, most affectionate; could walk with her in city traffic with no lead, and no problem. Would love to have cloned her.
