More On The Amish SMV Law Here In Ky.

I guess I'm naive but I don't see why having a required SMV sign is an issue. If a person is cruising down the highway at 55 mph at 4am on their way to work and slam into the back of a black buggy traveling at 10 mph...case closed. I think that it's in the public's interest to have the SMV sign better yet flashing lights.

I was also under the assumption that gasoline/diesel taxes payed for the roads, are they paying a use tax for using public roadways?

I have nothing against the Amish, or any other religion and lifestyle for that matter, until they start causing the rest of us grief. If we all stop paying fines for everything will the government just change the law for us too? Something stinks there in Kantukee and it ain't the manure spreader.

We had asituation here in Branch County where a non-Amish guy provided alcohol a lot of Amish teens at a party at his place. They came from several states to this thing, got busted for underage drinking. I can't remember what the guy got out of it, but I think some jail time was involved.
How they handle the lights, SMV signs here depends on each individual church. Some do pretty good and some seem to have a death wish. We seem to have 2-3 accidents every year involving Amish buggies. Usually the horse is killed, sometimes one of the Amish, and several are always injured. I don't know the answer to all of this, but I don't drive fast at night around here, too many deer and Amishmen.

the reflective tape does work and is just as visible if not more visible. I don't have a dog on this fight, I'm just stateing that the tape works well on trailers that people pull!

Why should they have to pay road taxes, the folks driving Teslas, Nissan Leafs and Chevy Volts (when they're on the battery) don't pay road taxes.

The Amish don't have to put SMV signs on their buggies in the name of religious freedom but the Catholic Church has to provide contraception and abortions under their health plans? I'm I missing something or does fail a sniff test?

In my opinion this country is going to he11 and I can't say we don't deserve it.

Is that true Electric car owners don"t pay road taxes? I assume they do drive on the roads so why should they not shoulder some of the costs of provision.
Churches don"t pay rates so we all should register our own new religion and find a friendly Senator [just mention votes] and have a Bill put before the Legislature..

It has been about 3 weeks since Mr. Gingrich, the local Amish basket maker, found out first hand the disadvantages of no SMV sign. I think he is out of the hospital now. He was critical when they scraped him off the highway.

I think the places where the Amish live they should provide a lane adjacent to the highway for them. The hazard is as much to them as motor traffic whether they have a plaque on the buggy or not. They pay taxes like everybody else and have a right to get to town safely.

Well I'm not sure but they can get around property tax by keeping the land owned by the church and churches are exempt.

They also don't pay any license or registration fees. No mandatory insurance either on buggies.

I live in Arthur, IL. We are home to the 3rd largest Amish sect in the nation. Here all horse drawn vehicles have SMV emblems, reflective tape, reflective tape around wheel hubs, and all must have flashing amber lights, plus headlights and tail lights. Also, certain townships require all horse drawn vehicles to have a license plate. This is done as a to identify a buggy in an accident, plus it is a good way to collect revenues. Here we have amish buggy lanes for horse drawn vehicles on the major highways. Most of the Amish are very good citizens and understand public safety for themselves and others. They contribute greatly to our economy. Come here on any given weekend and you will see some highly pimped buggies with stereos that will compete with any car and darn near all have cell phones. I have been here 47 years and seen it all when it comes to Amish. They are good folks and good friends. When our community needs something done you can count on the Amish to pitch in and get it done.

US Constitution guaranties them EQUAL rights, not separate/special rights.....After all, they aren't illegal immigrants, so why would they get special treatment that goes far beyond the law.

I have to obey the laws. You have to obey the laws. So why should someone who doesn't fit in with society as we know it get extra special "rights"?

I say, if they cannot or will not comply with laws in place to protect EVERYONE, they should be banned from public roads.

let them have thier religious freedom or whatever the reasoning is.... just prosecute them to the fullest extent for causing an accident, sui he!! out of them for damage, injuries, and let em pay a big settlement for a couple folks that went into shock and are afraid to drive now.....
Is it a clan thing maybe? I remember Amish in SE Ohio where I grew up that had markers on the backs of buggies, also in Missouri. Was in Amish country in about central Ohio (forget the town but straight north of Marrietta (Germantown??)... Saw several buggies with car battery and signal lights. One was at the island of a gasstation filling a load of gas cans.
