Just wondering if someone got ripped off....

OK - it's not a US classic but I'm really wondering on this one. I was hunting a 3 pt hitch post hole digger earlier this week.

I called an ad in CraigsList. A woman in NC was selling her 3 pt hitch equipment because her "older model Kubota tractor's transmission was beyond repair".

She said she sold the tires off of it and "the guy who was working on it accepted the tractor to cover the bill for checking it out."

I've never worked on a Kubota but it seems to me that she got royally ripped off for her tractor. I didn't say anything about my thoughts - It was a done deal a couple of weeks ago, several states away involving folks I've never even met.

Anyone have any experience with one of those critters? Could transmission a make a Kubota not repairable?

(Her mother had already sold the PHD to someone else - $300 with a 6" & a 9" auger.)

Well lets just speculate. Suppose it was something like a 30 year old B 1550 HYDROSTatic
The hydro trans goes out doubt that the tractor would have been worth the cost of the transmission and the shop labor, but that is just a guess. with one of the older gear drives it would probably be a toss up on repair vs value.

I fixed a trans in a bota that had 900 hr. on it one time... the bill was 4K with a few extras that had nuttin to do with the trans,,,,it would have been more if not for a bud of mine.. The part that broke was a $200 part that was engineered wrong,,, I had to buy $2000 worth up parts to upgrade their defect/mistake,,, They even admitted it  but said their was no goodwill money... I could understand both sides,,, they may not have had the money to fix it and the new owner was taking a chance with the unknown... Theirs allot of variables in this situation...

Thanks for the info Hobo & JM - I'm glad I didn't mention my thoughts to her now...I feel better about the guy who helped her out, too!

I have a whole barn full of items. That would cost more than just buying it new. With the price of parts and labor today. Some things just aren't worth fixing. My brother has a tiller that needs the transmission rebuilt. Even if I do the work for free. The parts alone cost more than the new transmission.

Junkbotas have good engines and the rest ain't much probably wasn't worth what a shop wanted to fix it.At $60 to $100 hr the $$$$ would add up quickly.Lawn and Garden Dealer near me charges
$65 to just tell the customer whats wrong with his machine fixing it is extra.

Thanks for the education, guys! My old tractor experience is limited to an AC D17 Series 1 - It just about bullet proof but it was basic - didn't even have power steering....narrow front, too.....made it fun....
