Urea in diesel rigs

Read that the folks who are paying big bucks for the new Mercedes diesel cars are pretty hot under the collar. Dealers softpedal the fact that they meet emissions standards with the urea system- tank needs to be refilled every 10,000 miles (same as service interval), and they charge a cool 1,500 bucks to refill it. So much for diesel economy.

Owners are said to be taking up pitchforks and torches. . .

Also, anybody hear about the high-buck electric car with new-design batteries- better range, lighter weight, ...oh, and did we mention that if they ever get discharged completely, your car turns into a "brick"- wheels won't move, has to be slid onto a roll back and taken to the dealer and new batteries installed- $30,000!

Batteries gradually discharge when car is not plugged in, due to on-board electronics, computer, etc.- takes about 11 weeks. 5 have "bricked" so far- and company is skating on the warranty because they say in instructions that car must be plugged in at all times when not in use.

More pitchforks and torches. . .

As i understand it, the diesel engines that use the urea treatment to bring the engines up to emission standards (tier 4), used an engine identical to the old tier 2 standard and then use the urea to clean the exhaust emisions. As i was told, the urea injection system can be removed (once out of warrenty) and the engine runs just fine... so although the urea has a cost to buy, it at least doesn't envolve during more diesel to clean the exhaust (that doesn't make any sense to me at all)...
Just my 2 cents.

I was some where the other day and saw DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) for $10.00/gallon maybe I should get into the Mercedes service business at like $500 for the service the owners would feel they're getting a deal and I could almost afford to drive a Mercedes

Doesn't make any to me either.

its still gonna regenerate, meaning inject fuel on exhaust stroke to clean the particulate filter when needed, the urea is for the NoX emissions, 2 separate issues, thank your local tree huggers...

Is there any reason, even a somewhat simple minded person couldnt do this themselves? On the flip side, if you can afford a new Mercedes, you wouldnt worry about a little cost like that!

Same here Allen. I could buy cheaper urea but, the system senses poor quality urea. Poor quality can come from age of urea. Urea has a experation date of one year after manufactured date, which is printed on container. My truck uses about one quart for every 250 miles.

Def @ carquest 2.5 gal $11.00. Petro truck stop 2.5 gal $12.00 . 20,000 miles on 1 ton chevy re filled 5 gal tank 3 times.Oh yea Chevy dealer wants $12.00 a gallon.

I have a new Ford that requires urea.It is filled by the dealer at a cost of $11 per gallon. The only problem is they only put a 20 some gallon fuel tank and it gets around 10MPG so if pulling a trailer at 7MPG you dont get far.It was suppose to get 15MPG of course mine is the only one and they cant seem to find a problem.

The story was in the Seattle Times newspaper- looks like they picked up the cost per 100,000 miles instead of cost per recharge. Mistakes happen, I guess.

You seem "wound a bit tight"

Yes new diesels do use a fluid to assist in emissions control.

At Mercedes they probably charge $200 for wiper blades (plus labor)

Do you go out of your way to create turmoil?

Again: if you can afford a Mercedes you have to take what they offer or go elsewhere.

Is mayonnaise really $5 a quart? (oh that's right it's no longer a quart)

But still, Im curious if this is something the owner can or cant do? And again, whats 1500 bucks in 100000 miles, if you can afford a Mercedes...

Yes anyone with a lick of common sence could add the adblue themselves.
On the other hand most Mercedes owners would need help adding washer fluid or checking the engine oil. Heck they have enough money to pay someone to do this anyway.

If you read about it the story hits on the high cost of diesel to gas. When in fact Mercedes is charging $32 for something you can buy from VW for $15 and charging $50 labor on top of that just to pour it in the onboard tank.
Then again that should not be a suprise. It is a Mercedes.

The truck stops I go to for my $900.00 worth of Diesel Fuel every TWO DAYS have another pump that despenses DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) for $2.59 per gallon. My new 2013 International ProStar don't have to have it but most other new trucks do use it. It is as easy to add the DEF as it is to add fuel.......but do Mercedes Owners pump their own fuel? If they do I bet they don't go to truck stops for it.........

(quoted from post at 17:55:47 03/25/12) Does anybody know..is..or was, at one tme..UREA
