does tire width matter?

Brotherinlaw has just picked up a M.F. 50. Going to use it to bring in the fire wood and make a food plot or 2. Trouble is one rear tire,24x14.9 is junk. He cant find a used one anywhere in the area and cant afford a new one. Would it matter if he put a tire with a different width on that side of the tractor. I cant think of any reason other than it will look stupid. He is finding there are alot of 24x13.9 available. This wouldnt be a long term thing just for a short time till he finds a matching set of something.
Thank you for any advice.

The 13.9X24 will have a smaller circumference than the 14.9X24. As such, the differential will need to do a bit more work, which is no big deal for light work, and the tractor will be a bit lower one one side.

If he puts the 13.9 on the left rear side, it will be known as a NASCAR tractor....turn left, turn left, etc. (ok, I know I"ll be mutilated by the good ole boys for that one, hopefully killed would be simpler and less painful) I wouldn"t do it on a heavy working field tractor, but hobby tractor- ok.

Let a little air out of the 14.9 and blow the 13.9 up a bit til the tractor is level. Some times different brand tires have different heights with same size tires. Seems to me BFG tires were always taller than Firestones of the same size.

I have never heard of that tractor having a 24" wheel avaible, all I ever knew about were 28" unless it is the high version and then they were 38" so I question the 24", please check that size again. 4 & 8 could be hard to tell in damaged rubber.

The MF50 tractor submitted for Nebraska Test #658 in June of 1958 was outfitted with 13-24 rear tires for tests F,G,H,K and J.

Mike........I have 14.9x24's on my 8N. They are awesome wide with 13"-rims. And the same diameter as the original skinny 10x28's on 8"-rims. I had to WIDEN the front axle so the front tires would center on the ramps of my 16-ft flatbed trailer.

Dunno, but 13.9x24 might make the tractor think its always going up-hill. (grin) .......Dell

I have never heard of or seen a 13.9 tire. Lots of 13.6 tires around though.

Yes, well he also got the tire size numbers backwards too... Let's crucify him!

Jeez... Let's be realistic here people...

Okay, ideally both tires should be the same size, same amount of wear, same tread.

Same size is next best, though no two brands are exactly the same diameter even though the numbers read the same.

Different sizes will work, but it is not ideal. You probably won't ever use the tractor enough for it to be a problem.

If you were plowing or running the tractor all day every day for whatever reason, I'd say try to get both tires the same size.
