Chevy 305 oil pressure?

What"s a normal oil pressure for a Vortec 305? Mine holds (according to gauge) 40 psi at idle and when "cooled" off a bit (150F) will shoot up to 80 psi. The engine runs great, good power, no funny noises, mileage is all over the place, from 10-22mpg but generally 14-17 mpg. Doesn"t really concern me. It"s always been like this, and it"s better than no oil pressure. TIA

With those numbers and multi wt oil you are fine.. Many idiot lights come on at 5 psi! Often, engines run at 10 to 15 psi at idle fully warmed up. Jim

Many of the old 305 engines had soft Cams and they went bad..(Wiped)..
A friend of mine would never race a Chevy 327, if it carried over 5 PSI at Idle...he never did loose a bearing, but sure blew a slew of Flywheels..!!
Turning his 327's 8,000+ back in the 1960's..
He always carried a Mallet, so he could knock the pieces of Flywheel loose that stuck in the Pavement..! Lucky, I guess...they always went "Down"...!!

The rules we ran under required us to use a steel "safety" bell housing.

The theory was that the steel would dent but contain the pieces if the flywheel or clutch broke.

I used to worry about the chevy oil pressure all over the place till I saw a new one doing it with multigrade oil. After that and talking about it on tractor forums, it's the way it works on some engines. Some have an oversupply pump and they run it into a pressure relief valve most all the time so the difference in pressure at idle and up and cold and hot is not much different. Other thing I read about chevys is that high oil pressure puts a load on the distributor shaft as it has to run the oil pump and recommended against it....like you would get if you put straight 40 in the engine.
