Starter generator rebuilder recommendations?

I've got both a starter and a generator that will need to be rebuilt. Both of these are 6 volt applications (that will stay that way) from a tractor that was very low production numbers, built in the mid-40s. Anybody have recommendations for a place that I can UPS these units off to and have rebuilt in a timely, yet reasonably priced manner? I used to be a big fan if Wilson products, but they pretty much blew me off for this application, despite having done an old International rebuild for me years ago. Oh, yea, before you tell me to get a local seasoned veteran to do this, the last one closed quite a few years ago and there isn't one within 100 miles of me. (I seriously researched it)
Thanks in advance.

If you are gonna ship it anyway, Send it to Luye Jackson rebuilders in Adrian MI. They do all our stuff. stodgy old guy with good work and reasonable prices.

I agree.......or buy the parts at the local parts house. I'd at least take 'em apart and see what's wrong. I'm a simple, semi-literate, retired cattleman/dirt farmer; probably 3/4 of the generators, starters and alternators that I ever had to 'go bad', I was able to fix my-own-self.........usually for just a few dollars.

If you're going to have them rebuilt I would recommend Harco Auto Electric & Parts. Call Tom Baker at 1-800-858-8517 or 1-410-879-9510. Hal

the six volt turns them over fast enough for starting. thing is everyone has other six volt problems that are not upkept and blame it on the six volt batt. i just dont know why you need small 4 cyl. farmall A or H on 12 volts spinning 200 rpm with the starter slamming the bendix into the ringgear damaging both. plus the magneto is designed for slow cranking by the use of the impulse coupling. i 100 percent agree with him keeping it original, espessially on a more collectable unit. 12 volt will devalue it.

After my long time guy closed up I was real happy with Auto Electric 191 Crawley Falls Rd. Brentwood NH 03833.

To each and everybody who posted and commented, thanks for your input. Now to clarify a couple of things, the starter and generator go on a four cylinder, 6 1/2 compression ratio parade tractor that will be run in the summer only, and has to be rebuilt back to stock specs, so that is the reason for keeping it a 6 volt, positive ground tractor. To the people who said simply buy the parts on ebay and rebuild it, I guess that is also a possibility, but these aren't Delco units. Both the starter and generator are Autolite-made and I haven't seen any parts for them at the electrical houses, PLUS the generator has had the brush cover off for 20+ years. So if anybody has a good source, I'm willing to take notes. Anybody know the source for a starter drive and an armature for Autolite products? Anybody?
Once again, thanks for the supplier list. One of them just might get some business.

I dont think they are Autolite products.I worked on them for many years.I think Ford made their own.Henry Ford got parts from the Dodge Bros in Model T Days but he got rid of them by buying up stock they owned.

Both tags are original and say "Autolite" on them. I'm just saying what the tags say. Maybe the internal parts interchange with other manufacturers, I don't know.

I had this company do a generator for me a few years ago. They did okay. It would be worth checking them out.

I sent the generator to them and in a week I had it back.

Last summer I semi-rebuilt an autolite starter using used parts because no new Autolite parts could be found anywhere I looked. Internet, parts houses and dealers had nothing. Jim

I highly recommend GAS..(Generator,Alternator,
Starter) in Altura Minnesota,(507)459-1150.
He's done several starter-generators for me,
and many Wisconsin Engine starters.
Another shop told me my "Wisconsin" starter,
"Wasn't worth fixing"..wanted $220, plus my core
for a replacement. GAS did a fine rebuild for
$80 !
